A few things:

Its good you didn't immediately walk away when she said she had a boyfriend.

Although you should have probably worked on an opener that doesn't scream: "I'm hitting on you"

I'd say your pitfall was expressing interest upfront. I've found when trying to hook up with girls with boyfriends, its important to choose the more subtle route. The number close comes in at the end and after you generated interest, not before. Its rare a girl will just hand out her number to someone she hasn't even had a conversation with before. Interest her, find something she is passionate talking about, engage her in that and then half way through the conversation, interrupt her and tell her you have to go. Get her phone number and hang out with her later. Be sure to put her in the friendzone and steal her frame. Disqualify her and let her know you arent interested in her. The best way to get a taken woman is to be standoff-ish yet intriguing. Let her know you are out of her league, that you are only interested in a friendship with her and she'll become hooked. Then wait for the boyfriend to slip up and put your dick inside of her.
