Hey sedditors,

I was just thinking about my job and how I explain my job when I'm out on the field, either on day 1 or 2. Just seeing what everyone else does and how you explain it. I'm trying to DHV my story but not come off as a ego maniac.

I work as a ceramic engineer doing research and development on eco-friendly ceramics. The way I like to spin it is just saying "ceramic engineer" I find that the ones who ask are what kind will be more interested and then I can go in depth. When I get into the technical science of it all, it usually goes over people's heads.

When people ask for more specifics, I explain how we are trying to make carbon negative products to better the environment, then I explain how I care about mother earth and how we as a society should take care of her (DHV). I also go into detail about how I work in a team and have to take leadership roles sometimes (I'm currently entry-level), work independently, and sometimes have to battle with the office jerk - all DHVs.

If the convo starts to trail off, I'll make something silly up. Like how I wear purple nitrile gloves at work, safety goggles, and lab coats. How 'Dexter's Lab' was one of my favorite shows etc etc.

I skip out on things like income and paid time off so that I don't look like I'm bragging.

So what does everyone else do and how do you explain it?
