A number is more than contact. It's a lot more personal. You know who has my number? People I trust. It's not on my facebook, my twitter. It doesn't get thrown around and it is the same for girls. There is also an association with traditional ideas of dating. It wasn't long ago that someone's number was the only way to contact them. Only a few years before that and only their HOME phone number was a way to contact them. I don't even have a home phone number at the moment.
I'm glad that you find getting someone's number so easy. In terms of your example, more information would be needed. Were there IOIs? etc.
Just my opinion btw.

This explains a bit, although I cant believe that the stigma hasnt faded with the growth of technology.
As for the last paragraph, I am not really one of "you", just came because askreddit suggested it. Dont know anything about indicators.
She is just a friend In my classes that I see a lot, and kind of turned down asking her out a few months ago due to a silly bet. she just broke up with her boyfriend, and is a little out of it. If you can get anything from that be my guest.

When someone gives you their phone#, that is implicit permission/invitation for you to call them.
When you Facebook-stalk them and contact them uninvited, you will be perceived as creepy/intruder.
That's a pretty big difference.

As a younger male, I understand what your question is. I feel the same way, not so much that there are other ways to contact them, but that it has never seemed terribly difficult getting a girls number. I mean, looking back it was hard at first, I suppose it was that fear of rejection, but now I wouldn't say that I expect it when I ask or I expect them to give it to me, but I am not worried that they will say no, I am always pretty sure they will say yes. I guess in that way it loses it's mystique, aura, or whatever you want to call it. Its still cool and feels good, but it doesn't have the same feeling it used to. I have become conditioned to it and it doesn't seem like an achievement any more. It just happens. I am in no way a player, but I think that in a way getting a number is like a small baby step. So I always like to applaud and congratulate my friends and the guys on here that get their first few numbers. The moment one stops sharing this 'achievement' is when it seizes to be an achievement, not that this means its not important, but it loses its feeling of accomplishment.

Ask yourself what the pros and cons of a phone number are over other ways of contacting people. The biggest thing is the difference in access. Email, facebook and other similar contact methods all suffer from the same drawback. They don't go straight to the girl. A phone is with the girl almost all the time. What if you want to invite a girl out to an inpromptu hangout? What if you want to talk to a girl at night? What if she wants to talk to someone about something? Will it be easier for her to grab her phone or go on the computer?
To answer your question on why it's a monumental ordeal, you should consider that just talking to strangers is hard for many people. Being able to ask for a number is often just as hard. Not to mention, it's a crucial step to talking to girls more instead of having all that effort wasted by never talking to them again.
As far as your girl is concerned, I can't really tell much from what you said. I do know one thing though. Now you can talk to her whenever you want, where you couldn't before you had her number.

The only reason why you should exchange numbers is to be able to contact each other should anything come in the way of the date that you have already planned. If a girl gives me her number, then I make sure to set up the date ASAP - and preferably before she leaves.
Just getting the number makes the connection between you fade, and you have to rebuild a lot when you finally contact her. It's better than nothing, but far from optimal.

Simply, it's a greater personal investment on her part. She will act in a fashion that backs it up.

I don't know about you, but I only give my number out to people I actually want to see again. Everyone and their grandma can have my Facebook info for all I care, but if you get my number, that means I look forward to hanging out again.
Sure, social networking has changed things, and some girls do give out their phone numbers without much thought or care, but most of the time (especially girls who get hit on a lot) its personal. Its the only way to directly contact them and says "Yes, not only will I allow you to get in touch with me again; I actually want you to."

To some people it represents a level of success only dreamed. 4 year ago I would have considered that an accomplishment. It means I not only initiated a conversation and it didn't crash and burn, but I had the confidence to give it a chance to crash and burn.
Just like at one point I thought dancing was a great accomplishment.

Girls will give their number to anybody. It is response that is harder to come by.

Ignore what everyone else is saying about phone numbers. They mean shit. The sad truth is almost any girl in almost any situation will give you their number, if for no other reason as to not be rude or to get rid of you!
The real challenge you face is flaking. 90% of those women will flake on you. I think this is the significance of game. Ultimately, your game would be so spot on that they'd be seeking you out or, better yet, take her home that night!
