So the next step is to try and get my intentions known.

It's not the next step. Get your intentions known from the first moment you approach.

So during the first minutes you could say something like: "Yes I approached you because you stood out/look interesting".
I'm in college too and when I did this I got appreciation from the girl about my honesty. Also you don't waste time because the girl will say if she has a boyfriend.

No, if the girl thinks you want something from her, she'll get defensive and move on.

If you let her know that she's smart/funny/sexy/well dressed/interesting/unusual she'll be pleased and keep talking.

I'm developing a theory that you shouldn't look for her reaction after a complement - that says you are looking for approval, or a pat on the head (good dog). Right there, you let her know all about your inner game.

Do NOT say:

"You are beautiful..." <pause, waiting for response>

Say (when she arrives).

"Hi - You look fantastic. Let's head over and grab lunch".

You are making a statement about reality. You are secure. You don't need approval.

And overt touching is fine. If you think it's awkward, sit and watch people interact sometime at your college. Sit where people meet friends and watch. Or try a bar.

You don't grab her boobs, you touch her shoulder or hand to get her attention, or to emphasize a point.

And don't do the even more pathetic:

"I like you". <crickets>

Just suggest doing something date-like. "There's a live band at Bill's Bar tomorrow. Let's go check them out."

What do you mean by "overt touching" and why is it a no?

You can get close, into her bubble; you can touch in a non-threatening manner, lower back, shoulders, and legs touching. You can put your arm around her, things like that.

In my opinion is has to do with the way you answer her questions.

It should never be a direct answr and you give a kind of sexy smirk while staring them in the eyes.

It really isn't about what you say.

Just out right say it. "do you have a boyfriend?" "The reason I'm asking is cause I find you attractive. you have this spontaneous(or whatever you feel) vibe to you that id really like to explore."
