I've met lots of men, and I've identified three distinct archetypes: the socially adept everyman, the highly skilled expert, and the well-connected individual with pedigree. Each has its unique appeal and influences interactions differently.

I found that if you are just an average person, you can pick up on social skills. For example, a janitor (the social savant) who is socially skilled can even strike up a chat with a CEO, and the CEO might enjoy that chat too.

In most cases, while observing these guys, it's not just a skill but something innate too. I tried to break down the way they talk and interact into rules, but I've miserably failed to recreate the magnetism and ease they have.

There are lots of factors that influence this. Firstly, not every janitor can chat with a CEO; the CEO may feel offended because of the social hierarchy, etc. But it's evident that some men can talk across the hierarchy in a group without offending anyone while maintaining a fun environment.

The second category of men (the experts) might not really have many social skills, but they are incredibly good at what they do. So, there are always people equal to, higher than, or lower than him who come to pick his brain. He has access to a lot of people, but in person, he might be slightly mean/rude and lacking social skills, or lacking the ability to make people feel comfortable. However, this doesn't bother people as they come for something he possesses.

Now, there's a third category of men (well-connected), the guy with a pedigree, family assets, etc. This guy may have class and sophisticated habits, but he might not be as socially good as the janitor discussed in #1. Yet, probably more people know him and come up to talk to him.

The social skill gap between them can be as wide as the quiet nerd vs. the popular kid in high school.

But women seem to go for the #2 and #3 types, not really #1, who is the one who possesses the real goldmine of social skills.
