How do you stay in contact/how often do you communicate with your kids on days they are with your ex?

Daugther ist 17, she is here 7 days and then gone 7 days. We see eachother on every tuesday evening at the fitness club bc she wanted to do sports with me. Thursdayevenings I see her also at the fitness club but we don't make an appointment for that. Just saw her and brought her to her mom. But I hardly hear from her otherwise when she is at her mothers. Only for organisational stuff if really nessacary, I don't want to disturb her when she is at her mothers.

My wife didn't had a room for my son (14), so he is with me. Very sad story. Very sad that it wasn't important for her to make sure he had a room too. He is suffering a lot. We used to game too with me but I am not good enough. I watch all his soccergames and drive anywhere he is playing. We watch sometimes some serie or soccer games.

The problem with being 14 as a boy is that he is in the middle of puberty and I ofc get those unstable feelings all over me from him. That sucks totally that I have to do this all alone. I have a new girlfriend but he doesn't want to have to do anything with her. She is not allowed to come over from my son. I am going easy with him and give him lots of time. I know this is all very hard for him and I don't want him to feel unsafe in the only place he has. My daughter on the otherhand wants to meet her and get to know her.

Puberty isn't the easiest age for a divorce...

With 14 kids can decide where they want to live, my ex thought he would not want to live with her anyway so she took only a bedroom apartment instead of 3.... she didn't even ask him. She now has her sort of a "girly shared apartment". Think whatever you want to think about that...

My 8 and 10 year olds FaceTime me anytime they want from their iPads. Typically it’s when they get home from school and before bedtime. If I’m going out and know I can’t FT them at bed time I FT them earlier and let them know. When the kids are with me they do the same with their Mom.

We also play Fortnite together a fair amount (3 man squad) and they both really enjoy that time!

I was fighting over a teenage boy so xbox live baby. He spent every moment of every weekend in voice chat with me while we played minecraft. He's with me and what are we doing at this exact moment??? Playing minecraft and it's been like 3 years of this ROFL. It's an okay game, I don't dislike it but I play it bc it's how me and my son bond

Not your exact situation because I'm fighting over a toddler. But i get to face time my kid most every night.

I've got a coworker with preteen kids and they get to call their dad every night.

Given that your kids are at the age they have their own phones you can probably talk to them whenever you want. Within reason. Like don't demand they call you at 10pm on a school night.

Not dumb at all. TBH, most of the posts here are about exes interfering with dad parenting time using FaceTime and whatnot. For me, I just text or call when I need to talk to them, otherwise let them be with mom. But depending on ages, a good morning and good night call are standard and the minimum. And kid-initiated calls are always ok.
