Throwaway account as my wife follows my main account.
My wife (34F) and I (34M) have been married for 9 years, together for 14, and we have two children.
Long story short, prior to this year, I was depressed. This period lasted for almost 3 years, and was a culmination of various things (my best friend dying, work stress, life in general).
During this time period I did not have sex with my wife even once. My libido had drastically decreased, but whenever I did initiate, my wife said she wasn’t in the mood and wasn’t feeling attracted to me. That really hurt me, and was also probably another of the causes of my depression.
However, starting this year, I made a resolution to improve my life outlook whatever necessary, and at least fake it till I make it. I started going out more, going back to the gym again ( I was a gym addict before I was depressed), and had a more positive outlook on life. It’s been almost 9 months now, and I can say I’m the fittest I’ve ever been, because I really slog it out at the gym and take out all my frustrations there. I am also generally much happier, and have a very active life.
My sex life has also drastically improved, and we have sex frequently. However, that is the only thing that really bothers me. While the sex is great, I don’t feel any emotion or love for my wife. I still feel very hurt that my wife rejected me for years and told me many times she was not attracted to me.
Would I be the AH for considering leaving her now that I have my life in order? I don’t think my wife stuck with me at my lowest, and that has severely impacted my love for her.

I started to read the comments, then remembered that that sub is a misandric shit-hole that routinely excuses women's bad behavior and almost constantly frames the man as the problem in any equation. It's extremely telling that one of the top comments has more upvotes than the post itself, and is of course "Well, consider your wife's feelings".
There's a laundry list of failures in that situation. Like, first and foremost on both of them for being adults responsible for children: Depression has levels of intensity and duration. If you've gone more than six months in a depressed state, you need to be seeing a medical professional. That's like a baseline, your family, friends, and spouse should all be pushing you toward treatment if you're going through a major depressive episode. Moreover, the moment this guy became aware that his wife was no longer sexually interested in him, that should've been a fucking signal flare to engage in couple's therapy, especially if it was hinted at or explicitly confirmed that his depression was at fault.
And I understand people can have 'custom vows' or whatever these days, but the so-called 'sanctity' of marriage is allegedly very well understood by the general public. "To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do we part." It's so fucking prolific, I didn't even have to look that shit up and I've never been married. And dude's wife was clearly in violation of those vows. For 3 years, until he got better.
The damage is done, her true colors were revealed. She's a fair-weather bride, and did not meet his emotional/physical needs when he was sick. He lost his emotional investment, with good reason.
Blanket rule, gender irrelevant: If your so-called life partner breaks their vows, you are not the asshole for ending it.
And never stay in a loveless relationship. It's dishonest for a start, but it also hurts everyone involved by depriving them of the freedom to find a loving relationship elsewhere.

I'm currently debating an anti-male from that thread. If you see her get the last word, it's probably 'cause the mods removed my comments without telling me. (Sometimes, moderators leave warnings when they delete comments, but not always.)
edit: My opponent in that thread, like a big ol' chicken, blocked me. I still got the last word by editing my most recent reply to her.

I honestly don’t know why you bother. That person doesn’t have the courage to have a long lasting named account for a start, but also hides behind the typical feminist narrative that a woman withholding sex is always justified by some “emotional labor” she’s been forced to take on, regardless of the actual circumstances.
They’re clearly immune to the fact that you’re pointing out their obvious assumptions at the lack of information presented in the original post.

👍 Just remember, if you reload the page, and it won't load or says "server error", that means you've been blocked by the coward you're arguing with. And if you get blocked, you can still "win" the debate by editing your comment to indirectly "reply" to your opponent.
But first, you'd have to see your opponent's response by going to your profile, right-clicking your comment, and left-clicking "Open Link in New Private Window". These instructions are for Firefox only.

I've always wanted (but I'm too lazy) to do reposts but changing the genders. I've seen some pretty similar ones where the reaction is opposite, it would be fun to compare when the post is almost identical except for the gender.

His wife was "there", but she wasn't really there for him. People are making excuses for her, but she's really only there for him when he's at his best.

They're just gonna pile on the male/masculine party, like they always do.

Some of the people there are encouraging communication, which I always like.
However, a lot of these "how do you think she felt"s are also appearing, and seem to only be there because OP is male.
[–]Ekhoi[S] 16 points17 points18 points (1 child) | Copy Link
And it gets worse than that. Some people are acting like the guy should be grateful the woman stayed at all.
I’m not saying he should follow through with divorce. I would need more detail, and I agree, communicating is always better. But why must society always invalidate the man’s feelings and needs? That’s the part that is messed up for me.

I feel like the problem here is less them saying things about him, and more the fact that they wouldn't say them to/about a woman
[–]mrBored0m 4 points5 points6 points (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, communication first is better than leaving ASAP. You should discuss your problems, insecurities etc before breaking everything because sometimes you can fix that etc etc.
But people on that sub would advise to leave if OP was a woman and her husband didn't have sex with her.

I just realized that the body paragraph did not get posted, so I’ll summarize it here. For me, it’s not the fact of whether or not this guy is the AH that bothers me. It’s the fact that the guy’s needs were never considered, and the fact that if the roles were reversed, the woman would be encouraged to leave. Anytime a relationship goes South, men are always to blame.

How dare he forget that he is first and foremost a tool for her? Now he's getting all uppity, after selfishly ignoring *her needs* for 3 years. Her need to have a happy, healthy, attractive husband. And she probably did all the housework and raised the kids all by herself, all while bravely allowing that... *thing* to even sleep in the same bed as her. I bet he even played video games at some point. He's lucky she didn't leave with the kids already. Red flags, toxic gaslighting, you have a *husband* problem.
....
Their comments are as disgusting as they are unsurprising. Just a little slice of everything wrong with this world.
