I just saw a weird guy bother a group of Eastern European tourists in my local grocery store, trying to get a number. It was weird. He kept following them around.

Firstly; don’t be that weird guy who goes to the mall to pick up girls. It’s weird and creepy. Instead, be the guy who is busy with stuff and has a purpose and is always walking with a purpose and direction. Maybe you need to go to the mall to buy new socks. While you are walking maybe you spot a hot lady. Then you can stop and say “hi there, I’m a totally clueless newly single guy and you look really hot. Can you help me pick out some clothes that would make me look attractive enough for someone of your league?” or whatever opener you want to use. Chat a bit, flirt, see if she engages, and if she does, say “well; those socks ain’t going to buy themselves, I need to go. But tell you what. We seem to be connecting so let’s continue this on a proper date. Give me your number and I will call you tomorrow to arrange it”

IMO having a 3 day bootcamp is not even enough to train someone to do basic “cold approach” (that’s the term you’re looking for, look it up in this sub if you want to read more). Let alone giving tips. You could get 1,000’s tips from thousands of redditors here and they would sound contradictory to each other.

Can you start a fun and interesting convo with a stranger woman? Can you make her smile and laugh? Can you get her so excited she starts pinching and slapping your arm and say “if you were a piece of cake I’d eat you up right now!”?

Openers are basically the new version of pickup lines. Just say “hi, how are you”, “I just need a minute of your time”, or “I need to talk to you real quick” if you’re a beginner. Like a pickup line, an opener is not a mantra or magic words. It doesn’t work if you treat it as such. Its function is just to get her attention, to make her look at you, or to make her stop walking, after that it’s done doing its job.

You need to see it as a big picture, from start to end. This is why I asked you whether you can hold an interesting convo or keep it flowing to see your social skill level at.

What would be good openers for one girl in both places and a small group of 3-4 girls in the mall

This is one of the most difficult scenarios to approach a woman in a group. If you're a beginner, don't do it. It's been 5 years since I've done this but I always avoid small groups, it's easier in big groups but not 2-3-4 girls + target. In a big group it is as simple as going up to the group and asking the group pointing at your 'target'.. hey guys quick question, is she single? [If yes] I will steal her for 30 seconds.

Anyway, it is not as easy as I wrote, there are all sorts of things to stop you from talking to her if you are not good looking, so better focus on single girls.

EDIT: If she is single, this is tricky because it is not okay to start with an direct opener but if you start with an indirect opener than she may think you are a salesman and be ready to reject you in the next two seconds. For this reason be clever and it's better to make eye contact, then after a minute or so move somewhere else, make eye contact again and now it's OK to tell "Hi, how's it going?" or whatever indirect/ situational opener you want (not direct because is a bit weird at 37 to be direct, leave direct openers for teenagers and guys in their 20s)
