I think the question sounds a bit too much like an interrogation. Also, pay attention to where you put inflections. I'm conventionally attractive and have had mediocre, and even traditionally, unattractive people catch my eye before. It's about how you make others FEEL about themselves more than the impression you push onto them about they should feel about you.

You can look like Brad Pitt and still get this type of reaction. One sample means nothing. If this happened on a regular basis, then you can start questioning if your appearance is the problem.

I'll be honest, looks don't matter too much if you're good at approaching. Obviously being good looking is a bonus, but I've found women don't care too much. It's possible your body language came off badly, or how you dress, or she just didn't feel like talking, which honestly isn't your fault. A lot of this is arbitrary, some girls will want to talk to you, some girls won't, it is what it is

I suggest you look your best and work on your accent. "Where did you get that from" comes out of nowhere. Maybe make a surprised look and then ask that question in a humorous way. If you are balding consider a hair transplant.

Your personality matters a lot more to women, so it can offset what you consider bad looks. We men are harsh raters of ourselves.
