People who grew up having their fears and other fragile emotions validated or empathized with are less likely to turn into typical addicts, jerks, bullies and heartless criminals. On the contrary, those who are immersed in a culture that tells you that getting out of fear and low esteem is as simple as making as "making a choice/decision" or "exercise your willpower/free will" are very likely to hate themselves for "lacking that willpower" and subsequently explode this self-hate into all kinds of violent outbursts be it physical or verbal.

That is why the more you or your society ASSUMES resilience can be achieved predominantly by willpower/free will, the more fragile and self-hating you or your society becomes. What an irony.

And this is why more men than women are more helplessly stuck in all sorts of overt and subtle inner demons led around the nose by worshipping the overrated theology of "you have a willpower/free will".
