Attempting to censor, or even discredit, people just because you don't like what they have to say is only going to lead to totalitarianism, and not just government totalitarianism. Yes, that goes without saying, but this is the UK, where if it attempts to say it, it'll be arrested.

But that's about complex issues like "cause and effect". Does the Daily Mail not understand that "separating women from men" and "separating men from women" are the same thing?

If women want to have their own tube carriages to avoid men then by all means, so be it. Less women will be assaulted and less men will get falsely accused. It’s a win-win imo.

As evil a deed as that murder was, the fear of civilian men in the aftermath (at least how it continued after the facts came out) was asinine. The whole thing was police brutality, not an archetypical Hollywood femicide.

Wayne Couzens was not some guy lurking in a dark alley who ambushed Sarah.

He was not a catcaller who refused to take no for an answer.

He was not a rando walking behind and leering at her whom the police couldnt arrest when Sarah saw him as a red flag since he hadnt broken the law yet, then went ahead to kill her.

He was not even an impersonator.

He was an actual cop who fooled Sarah into getting in the car with an arrest for not being home during lockdown as the alibi. He outright took advantage of what civilians are trained to assume "don't mess with a cop", possibly tinged with fear of what happens to those who resist arrest in the year following George Floyd.

The vile crime was preventable. Not by arresting innocent men who make women feel bad vibes without evidence. Not by cracking down on eyeballs of TFL/National Rail passengers. Not by demanding men cross the street for women. But if the Met actually fired Couzens for his prior misconduct when it happened, he would've been powerless to stop Sarah walking home. Civilian men do not have the power to suspend someone's freedom, plain and simple.

I sometimes imagine if five minutes before the police interaction some nasty guy catcalled Sarah. If that happened, she may have very well told him to f*** off and that wouldve been enough. Because he didnt have the power of a badge. And frankly, if the catcaller recognized her image when the story broke, I think he'd be shocked and mourn her loss even if she refused to give her number. Because even nearly all men who hit on women are not violent psychopaths.

Instead of "The Good Guys Guide" which encouraged civilian men to self-flagellate since women "don't know you're a good guy" (which is literally the essence of a society built on due process, tolerance, and liberty), police forces shouldve educated people on their rights in interactions. As an American who doesn't know the true extent of UK lockdown terms at the time, I think it should not have been an arrestable offense to be walking outside. Even if Couzens had just taken Sarah down to the station and ran her fingerprints in accordance with whatever rights are afforded to suspects in UK (the equivalent of Miranda rights), that seems authoritarian. Also counterproductive as it could lead to overcrowded holding cells.

Another thing I take issue with is how they framed the way she walked on Poynders Rd (an arterial street with lights) and talked on the phone as assuming she's performing some inconvenient safety ritual merely because she was female, making her into a martyr for women's fear of street crime at night. When you look at a map of that area and realize the walk was from Clapham Common to Tulse Hill, you'll see Poynders is one of the most direct routes. It's unlikely she wouldve taken a dark alley if she had only been born with a Y chromosome. The talking on the phone may have simply been because of personal reasons that weren't safety-related. Of course she wasn't going to dress provocatively anyway in early March in London. And citing her brightly-coloured winter jacket? Based on pictures, I think it look good on her. Guess what, maybe thats the reason she wore it? Her sense of style, ya think?

Which is not to say that there is any merit to victim-blaming arguments. No matter how many streetlights there were, what she wore, or phone or not, the fault lies solely on the perpetrator. And I am glad that he will never see daylight again for his depravity.

A bit of a tangent (I'm a huge fan of the tube): Four of the lines (and soon five, the Piccadilly is about to get new trains) have open gangways allowing free movement for the length of the train where the concept of an exclusive carriage isnt really an option. Another thing is that if you go to the transport museum in Covent Garden, you'll see how a 19th-century metropolitan line carriage had a special compartment for ladies only, but this was not popular then. They also say on the info panels how the idea of bringing the concept back has been floated but is discriminatory and fails to solve the broader social issue of sexual harassment.

Kentish is right, her idea is just a bandaid and it doesn't address the bigger problems.

Maybe she saw that it worked in Japanese subways and figured that a similar segregation should also works here. Besides her trauma.
