My technique was basically one of two:
(1) Befriend or "Brofriend"
(2) Lead them into the Tool Trap

The first person to lose their cool in such a situation has lost the girl, period.

The Befriending method works well on sociable guys. Introduce yourself confidently, introduce your date. -- "what's your name?"
This gets him into a compliance frame. At this point you can buy a drink, or ask him about himself.

Tool Trap is when you know the guy is already a douche canoe -- and you'll want him to make himself look foolish. I usually just put my hand on her lower back gently, while he's trying to pull, and I sit back and smile and nod along. "Good technique man, like really, I never would've thought to use that trick." Turn to your date: "What do you think, would this work?" If she's chill, she's more likely to play along with you.

Of course, at this point, there's the risk he's going to get upset -- you're trying to walk that line of him losing his cool but not enough to want to fight. Just enough for him to act like a tool.

edit: regarding push-pull. Push-pull is simply an attraction multiplier. Attraction must be there first, you need to build that up with some initial DHV, mirroring, kino. Push-pull is a little like negging, but not quite. You push back on something that she's asserting or implying, even if it's taken out of context. Then you pull her back by turning it into something that validates her choices.

Push (space or challenge) <-> Pull (connection)

Push reduces certainty or introduces light tension:

Playful teasing ("Okay, don't let that go to your head.") Mild disqualification ("You're cool, but I don't usually date people who are always late.") Independence ("Anyway, I've got to run—I have plans.")

This creates unpredictability and prevents neediness. Sometimes disqualifying yourself immediately sets up an interesting dynamic, but it's hard to pull off.

Pull is about (re)building the emotional connection. This is what makes certain guys "interesting" to women.

Compliments ("You're surprisibngly fun to talk to.") Engagement (eye contact, curiosity, warmth, closeness, kino, etc.) Validation ("I like how confident you are." "Your fashion choices enhance your style.")

I was talking to a friend, who was still "fuming" about a guy a week earlier had told her that her shoes "looked like stripper's shoes". She thought about that guy for a week, from a throwaway comment.

Women are emotional. Your job is to be an emotional driver.

Try to talk about topics you both can relate to.

Tease her a bit.

Whisper something in her ear. By doing this you're in her personal space and your warm breathe stimulates her ear.

You want it to where she's really engaged and focused on you.

The problem is you aren't interesting. Push pull is just one technique and it will only get yourself so far.

The guy recognized you're interaction was weak and possibly she made eye contact for him to come over.

Push pull won't necessarily get investment if your conversation and rapport game is off; more important is working on connecting with her on a deeper emotional level, and ensuring you weave conversations into less traveled grounds, away from small talk.

Push-pull is just one concept used when talking to a woman to avoid monotony in a conversation. During the interaction, you should use it at most twice, otherwise, it can come across as creepy.

The trick is to apply push-pull only if she is already "hooked" otherwise it makes no sense. Sometimes, if there is strong eye contact, you can even use push-pull as an opener. Remember, push-pull won’t work miracles, it might give you only 1-2 minutes of playful talk, but after that you need something else, you need to be a good story teller: "did you say you work as a cashier? It reminds me of a friend who told me about her ex, she was a cashier too, and he said about her… [insert a funny story]" or, for example: "do you hear this song? It reminds me of… [insert another story]." That’s how a normal conversation flows: without stories, it quickly becomes boring.

You can specifically practice push- pull actually. You can google pictures of hot girls and flip through them and practice push-pull. Works pretty well.
