Here is the current literature on your topic. Its not that you have to dumb it down, but it has to serve a purpose.

Women naturally respond to topics about emotions and relationships. As you diverge from that style of communication to her eyes it feels you are speaking Martian. She will understand you, but it will be the equivalent of you trying to watch a soap opera, it is just boring.

Now if you want to be intellectual, you can. But it has to communicate a strong sense of reality and direction about the world. The girl will respond to that (subcommunicated frame and leadership), not to your topic per se.

RE: topic selection, you dont need to dumb it down necessarily, just dont talk about topics that would bore the F out of women. Imagine you were with a group of people and some of the women started talking about periods and tampons and women's hair products. Bored out of your mind, right?

This isnt specifically a women thing, either, because if i talk to my friends who are dating coaches about shooting guns, theyre going to be bored. But if I talk to my Marine friends about software engineering, theyre going to be bored too.

The socially calibrated thing to do is select topics of conversation that you have in common with the other people in the group.

That being said, be careful about putting too much emphasis on topic selection as a whole. Topic selection isn't that important. It's not WHAT you talk about, it's HOW you talk about it. Kind of like when Vin Diesel said (paraphrased): "its not the car, its the driver."

Fact is, you're not going to talk about 'intellectual conversation' with excitement and enthusiasm because you're too distracted saying the 'correct' thing rather than the 'fun' thing.

The content is a vehicle for presence, powerful punchy delivery and variation in cadence to maintain interest - communication skills. It's like listening to Drake over a monotonous podcast; take the actual 'meaning' out of it (pretend you can't speak English and don't know what they're saying) and listen to it as purely a 'sensory experience' and you'll see what women see.

Women actually love to hear you speak passionately about things they don't know about - though the key distinction is passion, the infectious 'vibe', charisma, enthusiasm, the emotional value they get from it.

Would you consider this part of the numbers game?

No. People do have subjective, 'relative', experience. Being fun, charismatic, engaging, 'attractive', isn't random - but whether you actually show up individually to that person as that, in the moment, is dependent on your confidence/resilience in doing so.

'Numbers game' exists because, whether you are objectively fun, engaging, charismatic, coming across as 'high status', she could be tense, closed off, unreceptive for hundreds of other reasons before you got there. Despite how 'attractive' you may be, you're not the immediate priority in someone's life - although, if you come across well, they're obviously much more receptive than they would be otherwise.

All that being said, if someone else managed it, the situation was proven to be workable.

It wasn’t necessarily the subject matter. You made a rookie mistake. Talking about Gilgamesh and, let’s say, Enkidu, is best left for the bedroom, specifically during escalation, but limit the Gilgamesh talk to how Enkidu was made out of clay and their first kiss.

To put it shortly, the topics you talk to women about are sex, her relationship status and her dating preferences.

Your objective is to communicate interest (in her) and communicate intent.

To be a bit more blunt, Gilgamesh? Religion? Let's do a simple roleplay, I'm a guy interested in you (another guy.). I come up to you and say, "When's the last time you've been with a handsome well endowed man?" And top it off with "Do you like to be a bottom or top?". What do you think I want to do? Now let's use your self described intellectual route. I'm a guy interested in you and I converse with your friend about the different names of bones in the human hand. Now honestly, what exactly is my intent with you or am I communicating any interest in you? Do you see the difference? And it's not about how you spoke to her coworker. It's the Gilgamesh conversation. It's so irrelevant, boring and the fact you think it's intellectual, pretentious. But yeah I just gave you the blueprint.
