This video was disheartening to say the least for many reasons. If you want young girls to be empowered, then teach them to be articulate, to think critically, ask questions, do research, and talk openly about subjects. Don't coach them to rely on hackneyed 'finger wags,' 'head bobs,' overblown emphasis, attitude, mock rage, and bogus facts.

I understand the "shock" the video is trying to highlight, but the adults show no amount of composure either. The arguments boil down to rinse and repeat 'facts' that people have been wailing about since I was a little girl. Throwing little girls in dresses, having them swear, and coaching them to behave like reality tv divas doesn't help anyone.

Swearing is a personal choice, and everyone is going to have differing opinions on that (which is fine). I don't swear as a general rule - so I rather see these young ladies employing intelligence and a more sophisticated vernacular to convey their message. For the record, I would be just as dismayed to see young men swearing like this for a similar (or even the same) cause.

"Be loud, crass, and obnoxious" doesn't send a positive message to young adults.Here are a few commercials that I think handle the topic of 'inspire women' a bit more effectively and poignantly. I fully support encouraging young girls and boys to play, compete, work hard, and develop a positive sense of self. There's nothing wrong with a girl that wants to dress-up, or watch Disney - she can still learn to build with tools, study science/keep field journals, and read the newspaper as well. One of my problems is the false dichotomy people like to project "either you're a princess or you're a tom-boy." I am the most useful and appropriate expression of myself given the context within which I have to operate at that moment. I'm not a charlatan, or a manipulator. When I had to give my senior Thesis presentation - I knew that swearing was probably something I should avoid. I can wear a skirt on Friday, and help put up new siding for a house on Saturday. Instead of telling girls "this is where you're stuck, and you have to 'break out' of that mold to escape your fate" let's tell them to explore and evolve and grow.

A better commercial would have been to teach these girls how they can get involved in their communities, how they can lead projects by raising money, hold discussions with the people they know. Better yet - ask the girls to define in their own words what they think these issues actually mean, ask them what problems are important to them (what do they notice at school, in the media, with friends). Ask them to design their own superhero, give them ways to create something new, help them broaden their horizons in a meaningful way. Showing clips and snippets of young girls viewing the world through unbiased eyes, and expressing their thoughts organically could have been very interesting. This video has so much noise there's no room left for an actual message.

Putting them in full blown dress-up and telling them to swear before, during, and after quoting their 'facts' seems like a cheap parlor trick that undermines everything the commercial hopes to achieve. You can get people to sit up and listen in more effective ways.

I'm also left wondering - why is there no room for little boys in this commercial? Why is there no mention that they can be victims as well? Why isn't it safe for them to have a voice here? Where's the commercial encouraging them to defy the unfair and biased roles that society places on them? Is their a 'boys only' counter-part to this commercial? One that's meant to empower them?

Edit: Well, the Advertising subreddit doesn't seem overly impressed with the video either as of right now. It'll be interesting to see if that changes.

Firstly absolutely disgusting, why is that even remotely necessary?

Secondly - Isn't it feminists who moan about children being influenced while they're young and say how it's wrong? Apparently a pink aisle in a shop is wrong and doesn't give girls a chance to decide what they want but getting them dressed up and giving them a "fun" dramatic script to promote a controversial movement before they're really old enough to know if they agree with it is fine?

In addition to what was already said, I couldn't decide whether I should laugh at how stupid this video is, or cry at how stupid this video is.

The one point that really made this video for me was "Instead of telling girls how to dress, why don't you teach boys not to rape!"

Are you kidding me?! Are they unaware that rape is effectively against the law? Heck, why stop there?! Don't lock your doors! Instead, we should teach people not to steal. And forget seatbelts, every one is supposed to follow traffic laws. And I should be able to pet any dog I want whenever I want! I expect everyone to properly train their pets not to bite strangers.

It's not about oppression. It's about protecting yourself! If you don't want guys to think you're loose, then don't wear a sluts uniform! The most annoying thing is when a girl barely covers skin and then flips a brick when a guy so much as glances her way.

A quote I'll never forget from a documentary on sexual harassment against women is, "I know I dress more provocatively than most women, but I shouldn't have to deal with [guys looking at me]" with sad dramatic music playing in the background as if it's some sort of tragedy. To clarify, I never think any rape victims are "asking for it", but this argument to dress as slutty as you want with no consequence to yourself is idiotic.

I can't express enough how much dumb feminists annoy the crap out of me.

Not only is the use of children in this manner disgusting, but the things they said were patently false and were just commonly cited statistics that had no real source or research behind them. But by all means. Let's have little girls swear to make money selling t-shirts. Equal rights, right guys? Right?

No one advocates unequal pay for the same job. If women get paid less to do the same job, why don't companies exclusively hire women? Why have all the men not been fired already?! Because the wage disparity is bullshit and out of context.

So why is there a disparity?

Women are far more likely to work part-time, even for the same jobs.

Women are less likely to apply to jobs in higher management positions

Women tend to go for jobs with low levels of obsolescence (which often pay less than high obsolescence jobs like computer engineering)

Women take more time off work for maternity leave, missing out on raises and experience

Women take more time off work for family concerns like taking care of parents or sick children

Marriage is negatively correlated with wages in women, and positively correlated with wages in men.

Never married (as opposed to single) women that are in the same degree/profession, from the same/similar university, with similar work experience, with no children, and who work full time actually make 7% more on average than men of the same description.

Men are much more likely than women to negotiate for raises.

When you attempt to control for every other factor women make about 2% less with a deviation error of +/- 5%. This is the case ALL around the civilized world INCLUDING EUROPE.

Compare that to Muslim countries(and some asian countries) where sexism ACTUALLY EXISTS in mass.

The 1 in 5 raped statistic always bothers me because I honestly have no idea how true it is. I know the origin of the statistic is pretty outright wrong. Came from a study that only used two colleges and it was "sexual assault" not rape that was the 1 in 5 number. Since then questionnaires have been repeatedly given out that have varying definitions of assault and based on those definitions you can manipulate the numbers as saying everything from 1 in 20 to 1 in 3.

As far as going down this "Equality" road.

Women BY FAR get less severe criminal sentences for the exact same crimes

Women obtain custody of children far more than men.

And in cases of domestic violence by women against men, the men are still more likely to go to jail.

NATURE is not fair. But LAW and Government are supposed to be blind, it is very clear they are not.

This egalitarianist crap has to stop. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Equality under the law is moral and ideal. However what this egalitarianism crap is seeking is Equality of Outcome. Which means that men are penalized for their gender, and women are rewarded for their gender -BY LAW.

That is LEGALIZED SEXISM.

Fact is women will probably NEVER make as much as men. This is not because men are superior to women at all. This because women as a whole have different career priorities. You want that to change, fine - Tell women to go into more STEM careers, and tell women to not have children, or have men become stay at home dads. You will fail because many women are very much concerned with their "biological clock" halfway through their careers, and it is their right to choose that for themselves, but it is a choice, and all choices have consequences.

But to want this Egalitarian equal outcome is to fight for a principle that can only achieved by taking income from men and giving it to women. Which completely destroys the concept of EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW.

The fact of the matter is Sexism and Racism are still problems in this country. The fact of the matter is that LEGALIZED sexism and racism is far worse than what any individual can do to discriminate against someone because when it's legal - Everyone loses. In reality the individual bigot is the one who loses out if they are stupid enough to not hire, or appropriately pay a an outstanding minority employee. There's a saying that the only color that doesn't discriminate is Green. (AKA money & greed) - Which is a good thing.

Why does Sexism and Racism still exist? We'll for practical purposes, because we put it into law - AGAIN. And for philosophical purposes, because a mindset in this country that still exists, being- 'Collectivism'.

It's important to note that there is no such thing as Women's rights... Or Man's rights... or black rights, or white rights, or gay rights, or workers rights, or consumers rights, or any other kind of right except- HUMAN RIGHTS.

HUMAN rights are the only kind of rights than can ever exist. And until people realize this there will never be equality under the law.

What an absolute failure of a video.

I'm not sure what to think of this. You're showing me kids who have been told how to act and what to say and you expect me to be offended because they said "f*ck" (nice, thanks for censoring, man how offended I would've been had you not). It's not offensive, sad is what it is.

These people told girls how to dress and how to act to protest against things like girls being told how to dress and how to act. Yeah ok. It's sad that these kids are victims of people who use them for their political agenda. They've been denied the right to have a worry free innocent childhood, it got traded to being a tool. That's a lot bigger issue than cursing on a video and it would have been just as big of an issue had they not said one curse word. I am being a little dramatic, but I promise you it's not these kids' first time being made to deal with adult world issues. They're too young to understand completely, but their parents want them to worry about things children shouldn't have to worry about.

The curse words don't shock me. The unnatural body movements are not adorable, the attitude isn't real. It's all meaningless.

This isn't clever in the slightest.

I could not believe what I was watching, it was like a train wreck and you don't know what to do so you just keep staring at it. I was appalled they USED these children as tools to provoke a response for their causes. I definitely think there are issues for women that need to be addressed but this is certainly not the way to go about it. Pulling this sort of indecorous stunt actually hinders the message because instead of focusing on the actual issues people are just shocked and [rightfully] appalled at watching such young children spit out terrible words and messages they don't really understand. You know what those little kids understand about the situation?

That they got to dress up
That they get to swear
That they will be famous on the internet (oh how cool!)

So what does that teach little girls? Nothing good.

While I understand injecting humor into a social discussion can lead to effective, thought provoking satire, this did not reach that level for me. I thought the way in which the rape statistics (though bogus) were mentioned lacked seriousness and reeked of fake sentimentality. This video does have a positive aspect: I learned how foolish one looks if you excessively head bob and finger wag. I would like to post this on (r/cringe) but, honestly, I fear the backlash.

I wonder who actually goes for this kind of thing. This cannot appeal to the majority of the population, can it? Sure, I can believe (however awful) that there are people out there extreme enough to make such a commercial, but who are the people that see that and buy a bunch of T-shirts?

I have a couple of friends who identify as feminist, are a bit strong, all of whom would be entirely displeased with everything in this video. Including having the girls say the stream of "facts".
