Better decline expensive dates, if you aren't cool with them early on before you're invested in him. I have confused men like that too.

Learn to have a bit of a mean-spirit, you don't have to act mean, but you don't owe people shit. It's their choice to give too much too soon.

Best way to break up with a guy who fails vetting is in a very clear text message or email. Don't drive over. Don't call. Don't go on a date. If you've living with him you need to have at least one convo before you are 100% ready to break up that you're drifting (lots of girls won't do this because they want to secure something with someone else before they leave; this is where the monster girl thing comes in and where a lot of male anger happens). The break up should be quick and in person and you should already have very concrete move out plans with another females or male relatives help, not a new boyfriend or male friends help.

Women in general are way too quick to break up these days. Your time should be spent more on the front in vetting instead of on the back end, "now how do I end this one??"

There's no way to make someone happy about the fact that he's being rejected. Let go of your fear of being on the receiving end of anger or pain; it just goes with the territory.

If you're considered about the level of time and money guys are putting in during the vetting phase, then you can suggest dates that are low-key and low investment. But if (for example) a guy you just met insists on taking you to a 5-star Michelin rated restaurant for a first date because he wants to impress you, that's his choice... don't feel guilty if you don't reciprocate his interest after the fact.

The only thing that you really owe a person while you're dating is kindness and respect. If you're not interested, politely but straight-forwardly let him know sooner rather than later.

As an aside, you're in your early 20s, so if you're dating within your age group, you're likely meeting a lot of guys who simply don't have a lot of dating experience and haven't really developed the skill of handling rejection with dignity.
