Tips on quitting smoking?

I'm going to throw in some more.

This is a cliche but try and limit or eliminate shit you used to do with it. Coffee is a big one. Yeah, it sucks hard knocking off two at once, but I've found the 7 days thing to be true.

Lifting is huge. The first two weeks when you don't have dragon lungs you'll be lifting so much harder, it is its own reward.

Finally, 'it's never just one'. You may get to a point (where I am, after much trial and error) where can I have a smoke over a card game and I don't need a pack in the morning, but that took about five years without them at all.

Second finally, if you've tried everything - oddly enough I know several people where hypnotism worked (including my 2 pack a day father). My dad went in, came out and gave away a pack of smokes that were on his dashboard that very same night it was THAT effective. Not for everyone obviously, but just throwing it out there.

On top of all the other contributors, I would add keep on quitting. If you slip up don't give up, just try and quit again. It gets easier each time so don't stop quitting!

Just fucking do it. Learn that life is going to suck and have a plan for when you are stressed. Get in your head that no matter what, when you quit, something will happen that will stress you out. Get into your head that if your best friend died with your dog fifteen minutes after you quit, you deal with that grief in other ways because YOU FUCKING QUIT. Just keep repeating to yourself "I've had my fun. Time to grow up." Tell no one. People love to see you fail. Let them ask you. You'll feel proud, and you'll be less motivated to relapse this way.

No nothing November ended a near 20 pack year history for me, and I will never fucking do it again. Cold cold Turkey, motherfuckers!!! Never felt better, thirty pounds lighter and don't need a respirator to go upstairs. You can do it. It has been done. Learn your fucking potential like a man.

Change brands every week or 2. Change type, menthol, non, etc.. Change the time you smoke. If normally first thing wait 15 minutes, right after dinner? wait 20, etc.. Never smoke at the urge, wait different times.

Keep changing where you keep your pack, in a pocket? change pockets, on your dresser? move to kitchen, keep changing locations.

fill a glass jar half water, put in ashes and butts, every time you want to smoke, look at the contents and realize your lungs look like that. now open smell and breath in deep for 10 - 15 seconds, this is what you smell like after you smoke.

As you can see the first steps are to break the habit, the second half is to make you aware of the harm and mentally change you.

Also drink OJ, take vitamins, workout and get sun.

What brand of cigarettes do you smoke? I've found that additive free brands tend to be less addicting for me. I can smoke a few a few and not crave more. Try switching to an additive free brand.

I've also found that the best way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good habit. For example, when I was a teen I used to bite my nails like crazy. I finally got fed up and every time I felt the urge to bite, I'd immediately go and cut my nails instead. After a week or two I no longer had the urge to bite my nails. Obviously quitting smoking is more difficult, but the same method could work. And if you fail, no worries, just try again. Once you're truly good and ready, you'll quit.

Medications like champix can help but the side effects are vicious. If anything they make you realise that stopping smoking is easier than dealing with the side effects of the meds.

Try a variety of things until you find what works for you. I quit smoking about two years ago after having smoked off and on for about 10 years, and consistently for about 4 or 5. I smoked between a half and a whole pack each day.

What did I do? I simply quit cold turkey. I decided I really wanted to quit this time, threw the pack away when I finished it, and haven't smoked since (other than a cigar at a friend's wedding). In my experience, the first week was pretty difficult as far as cravings go. After that, it decreased dramatically to the point where I wasn't having any cravings at all after two or three weeks.

I honestly hate everything about "vape culture" but it really worked for me. You can start with a 12 mg of nicotine juice or more depending on how much you smoke, then slowly move down until you reach a 0mg nicotine level, then eventually you can stop. It's way easier than to quit cold turkey, also working out helps a lot too.

I was in a pretty bad place physically six months ago. I was working out but gaining no muscle, and I was depressed.

I stopped smoking, and to fill that dopamine void I started eating. A lot. I was finally hitting my protein goals and calorie goals that I was not able to hit earlier because I just wasn't able to get the correct amount of food down. I'm now 20lbs of muscle heavier, and feeling/looking great.

If you aren't lifting, you need to be. There is no excuse. If you are lifting, play around with stopping smoking and watch how much your appetite increases. Nicotine is a serious appetite suppressant. You will finally be able to bulk up. Your positive habits/goals will be mutually reinforcing.

The other thing? Don't hang around smokers. Every time you see a cigarette you have to fight the battle. If you don't see any cigarettes then the internal war within yourself will be much more muted.
