When the kids came, I was able to help my wife negotiate a position at her company where she stepped down from management and worked from home 20-30 hours a week for eight years (they really didn't want her to quit). Now the kids are older. Last year they recruited her back into a top management position. Think outside the box.

OP if you need to asks questions like this it's clear you have work to do to get your shit in order, even if you're a doctor/lawyer/whatever. Outside of having a good career and making good money, what are you doing to design your life, and why—for a man in your professional position—are there gaping holes in that plan? It's a signal that something is really off, that you don't really know what you want and you're coasting long hoping that others can make the big decisions for you—whether that's anonymous internet users or your wife.

Once she has kids she will need to stay at home and raise them, you don't want them to be corrupted/brainwashed by our insane anti-white, anti-male school system do you? Not to mention kids NEED their mom at home, raising and loving them, that cannot be replaced by babysitters and daycare, they will hate you for it when they grow up otherwise. So, maybe she starts shifting out now, or maybe ramps it up to earn more before quitting. I doubt your wife will go along with this those, women today hate that sort of thing, especially highly educated women. If she fights on this honestly you should break up before you bring kids into world with someone who won't love them properly. Of course this is just my opinion, aside from being back by years of study and such, up to you how to proceed.

But yea -

My wife is very smart and motivated. She is competitive and likes having a strong profession and making a meaningful financial contribution to our marriage.

Obviously we make a lot of back-of-the-napkin judgments on people, but to me, this kind of person is not going to be stoked to give up their career for children. There's probably a compromise in there somewhere though.

Since you are forward looking, you need to set up your life where you live comfortably on one salary. Do it now, it will afford many options in the future. This is what you need to do.

You do not need to push your new wife into a lower level career position. Who knows when or if you may have kids. Life throws many many curve balls. Let your wife work as much as she wants to work and let her climb the corporate ladder. Changes can be made when and if they are needed. The woman you reference is miserable because she probably has to work the demanding job to afford her current lifestyle. Again, you need to set up your life such that your wife working the demanding job is optional and, therefore, a choice when the time arises.

Don't be lame, but cut your expenses and learn about FIRE (and Mr. Money Mustache).

A lot of the guys are really bitter here, about that $500k salary. I'd ignore them.

First question: have you paid off the student loans? Any other loans? Your salary lets you do a quick payoff. Both of you should work for that.

As for the ideal situation, who is in what position? Ideally, she'd be a SAHM, but that's hard to get a woman to agree to nowadays. If she's the doctor, there are clinics she could work in, 5 days or less per week, 9-5. If she's a lawyer, paperwork working from home, I suppose?

Under no circumstances should you be a stay at home dad. Don't kill your relationship.
