My SO (very alpha, 36) and I (24 and trying to be the best first mate) have been in a relationship for over a year, and have been long distance for about six months. He works in Iraq with the military as a contractor. Luckily, he comes home tomorrow! I am very excited, but when we were on the phone to coordinate the airport pick up, I heard him take a drag from a cigarette.

I asked if that was a cigarette, and his reply was "I thought you couldn't hear that over the phone." I inquired (in a neutral way) how long has he been smoking for, and its been since March. Then the conversation went back to tomorrow. I didn't want to ask anything more because I know it is a delicate situation. Earlier this summer, he mentioned that other guys on the base smoked a lot but he was not partaking.

I don't hold it against him, because I know he's in a very stressful environment, surrounded by other guys who are smoking, and also in an environment where he has done it in the past (this is his 6th contract in the Middle East).

G, like most guys who spent time in the military, picked up smoking when he joined the services when he was a teenager. When we first started dating, he was in the process of trying to quit and went cold turkey about a year ago. He was extremely proud of himself for being able to quit, and was excited about all sorts of health pursuits from eating better to going for bike rides every day. I was really happy for him, as I know quitting smoking is incredibly difficult.

I'm not sure how to proceed with this. I know he might be upset for having a set back with smoking, and I want be there 125% when he wants to quit. But what if he doesn't want to quit smoking? What would a great first mate do?

Also, I am trying really hard to not think about that he wasn't 100% truthful when discussing it earlier this summer. I'm trying to stop overthinking about it, but it still hurts a tiny bit. I don't know whether I should communicated this or STFU.

Another caveat is that he is only going to be home for two weeks before going back for another 6-8 months.

Conclusion: My gut instinct for the next to weeks is to not nag about it, just be chill as a cucumber, and a pleasant person to be around. He never smoked indoors, so I'm sure he would excuse himself to go outside and be respectful about it. Who knows maybe he won't do it at all!

TLDR: SO started smoking again after quitting. How can I be a supportive First Mate in this situation?

Edit: He called me back a while after. Explained that he did not want me to know because it would most likely worry me. He started the patch a few weeks back because he did not want to be smoking when he's home. I'm not a 100% sure whether he wants to be done for good or just when he's home, but I'm going to be there to support him. Thank you everyone for your advice!
