There’s an exercise in “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” that helps with this.

Imagine what you want people to say about you at your funeral. This will help guide you on who you naturally want this to be. Synthesize this with the hedgehog concept (Jim Collins), and you’ll be able to find a way to create a concise & concrete mission.

I pictured what living my best life should look like. What things, relationships, friends, lifestyle do I need in my life to have no regrets. From there, it’s simply setting goals and identifying the necessary steps to get you there. I found it makes decision making very easy because you only need to ask yourself if something aids you in your mission or not.

That whole write out your obituary thing is silly and morbid. It's based on a ridiculous premise that you should live so as to die and be remembered. It's lame even if meant to be some kind of metaphorical exercise.

We had an interesting conversation about that here at askMRP quite some time ago, HOA I'm sure would remember.

Work out what you want to have achieved in your life before you die
Assess where you are in life now (spiritually, relationally friends, financially, home, career etc.. whatever you think it important)
Work out where you want to be (spiritually, relationally friends, financially, home, career etc..) - i.e. goals
Write down what you need to do to get from 2. to 3. even if it's small improvements. Make sure your goals are SMART (Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic and Time-bound).
Reflect daily/weekly on your mission and how you're going. Update it as you need to. I try to read my mission between sets working out.
