I would hypothesize that it's due to more butts (and bigger ones) being prevalent in the culture... both because black culture/music promotes big booty women and that culture is growing in mainstream effect, and because with the growing obesity epidemic (and the fact that chest doesn't grow nearly as much as backside when you get fat) butts are growing and more visible while breasts aren't.

Finally, with the leggings craze butts are more visible than ever; skirts hid them while leggings emphasize them. Tops haven't changed.

EDIT: Finally, with the west getting less and less interested in having kids, a fixation on chests would dwindle. Butts are about sexy/sex. Also, still a bit taboo (anal). Chests are meh to most.

Male perspective weighing in. This is my perspective so I by no means speak for all men.

Plastic surgery, particularly elective augmentation, has been and continues to be commonplace, especially in the west. Many women prefer the instant gratification of increased male attention when jumping up a size (or two) in bust. Likewise, western males, who have been indoctrinated by porn from a young age, combined with an increased propensity over time of single mothers raising men, has consequently resulted in many men having an Oedipal complex. Thus, we’ve had a bit of a perfect storm for those favoring bigger boobs. Although there are options to surgically enhance ones posterior, they aren’t nearly as tenable as are boob implants.

Another poster suggested ghetto culture has influenced a shift in preference towards butts instead of boobs. I think it’s an interesting assertion, ass indeed, rap culture does tend to demonstrate favoritism for booty’s relative to breasts.

Yet, I think the desire for derrières is a shift toward more traditionally valued female attributes. Larger hips are associated with the an improved ability to successfully bear children, which has historically been viewed as feminine and evidence of strong genetics. Despite the media’s best efforts, a more healthy body type is appreciated by men and women, a notion that is gaining popularity and traction, particularly in the west where the respect for such values have been out of style in recent years.

Secondly, a nice ass is something that has to be worked for, whereas you either have large (shapely) breast’s or you don’t. While not a genetic marker, a nice ass is strong evidence supporting a woman’s commitment toward being healthy and retaining their sexual attraction.

Then there’s personal preference, which may shed some light on male (and even female) preferences for rears. Do you have a nice ass? If yes, that means you either are a runner or engage in some sort of cardiac activity fairly regularly; engage in plyometrics; and/or squat heavy weight. Regardless of which of the 3 (or any combination thereof), sign me up.

Breasts on the other hand? I mean as long as they’re your breasts and not fake, great. But I prefer a C-cup or smaller. You’re going to get old one day and I don’t want to think of pictures of indigenous Chilean women scraping their tits off the ground because cruel cruel gravity slapped them with a big fuck you.

In closing, boobs are good, yet butts are more good.

I'm a guy and sometimes when we talk about women's I ask them: ass or breast? At the end it's 50/50, it depends on person what they like more. Some men like breasts more other prefer ass.

Everything has fashion trends, from body shape to eyebrow shape. It's rarely indicative of deep-sea value shifts... rather, usually a reflection of what's trending in media, which celebrities are in, etc.

Whatever comes in style will see people modifying toward it. In the 90s it was thin brows, rectangle lean body, breast augmentation. Today it's a fuller brow, lip fillers and hip/butt fillers.

No matter the tend, someone will come up with an evopsych argument that XYZ is fertile and is attractive, or XYZ takes effort to achieve and is thus attractive.

Take the best care of the body you DO have. If it ain't trendy now, give it a decade.

Do we have actual statistical evidence to back up that statement or is this just anecdotal?

One thing that kind of stopped me from chasing girls with large busts is that they're very hit or miss when the clothes come off...
