The Mosuo themselves sometimes use the term matriarchal to describe their culture in order to bring more tourism and interest into their culture. Mosuo culture does have characteristics of a matriarchal society, in that women are the head of the household, the property is passed down through the female line, and the women make business decisions; yet political power tends to be in the hands of males, disqualifying them from matriarchy status.

That is an example of one matarichy, it is also possible that there are other cultural factors in play that are causing it and not solely because of matriarchy.

Okay, but are there any examples of matriarchal societies that do and don't oppress men? Because the main issue that I already see before I even finished the title is that there are no developed or developing states or cultures that are matriarchs, so the dichotomy between the ones that supposedly exist is going to be skewed.

You only cited 1 matriarch, and compared it to patriarchs, of which there are at least hundreds. So when you ask,

The Mosuo structure has historically not been unusual even in patriarchical societies; it's called an avunculate family structure and is very common in extended family opposed to nuclear family structures because there's not really another way about it. But in an avunculate society a male is not responsible to its own biological offspring but to the biological offspring of its female siblings and other relatives. That's the only way "extended families" can ever work in a binary reproductive system. The child has to be absorbed into one of both of its biological families and it's maternal one typically so you get a structure like this.

Having said that the Mosuo are not "matriarchical" indeed and there never has been a matriarchical society ever to my knowledge—to call them matriarchical is a bit of a stretch.

I think it's because everyone actually gets what they want. Relationships are fluid and don't rely on contracts. We like each other? We shack up. We don't? We don't. Kids are raised communally, and let's face it, men's bodies have to actually suppress their own testosterone in order to rear-children. We CAN rear children, but our bodies have to change in order to do so, which kind of neuters us. Guys in the Mosuo society are probably really virile.

There are many matriarchy animals, mostly because have children is easy and female don't need provider.
Female sexuality is suppressed in patriarchal society because of paternity uncertainty, female don't need to worry about this problem.
I do think human are evolving from monogamy patriarchy towards lover polygamy matriarchy because we become richer and richer, until certain kinds of Transhumanism become reality.
Some males/females would be better off, while others would be worse off. Male provider/female lover are better in patriarchy, while male lover/female provider are better in matriarchy.

if matriarchal societies were that great, you wouldn't have to describe some primitive, obscure group that almost no one has ever heard of. the men may have better lives than the women in that society, but they're still just subsistence farmers and all.

with women in charge, matriarchal societies will never advance to the point where they have modern conveniences like modern healthcare or the internet. women can maintain a society, but they don't have the long term orientation or ambition to make it better.

Male sexuality is not suppressed in matriarchal societies the same way female sexuality is suppressed in patriarchal ones.

Female sexuality is trying to fuck the alpha while not getting fucked by the omega, (and possibly trying to get a beta to protect and take care of her).

Male sexuality is trying to fuck every woman in sight, starting with the least pregnant looking.

Patriarchy is just enforced monogamy. It's called patriarchy, but it's actually a compromise. Each woman gets a man, each man gets a woman. In a patriarchy, via religion or culture, men are seen as the caretakers or leaders of their wives. This is to satiate the female desire for the alpha by artificially trying to convince her that her husband is such.

Societies that let either male or female sexuality go unchecked, will probably have problems, unless carefully taken into account.
