I feel like social media has exagerated the traits of what people already had. For those who had a narcissistic streak, not they are all into Instagram and shit, for those who don't, they receive absolutely no attention.

No, I don't think so. Like Sunhappy said, it just allows people who are already narcissistic to engage on a larger scale.

Personally I don't think social media is this big boogie man people make it out to be. I only have like three friends on instagram who regularly get more than 100 likes. For the most part it's just a bunch of people posting cute pictures of their cat and getting 10 likes. It's an easy way to stay involved in each other's lives.

I don't think you can point to a single factor and claim it caused society to be any one way. Society has been and is being influenced by many entities and ideas, and those entities and ideas are themselves influenced by society. I think it's all a messy feedback loop that produces change.

I don't think people who are active on social media are narcissists. Sure, they post a lot of what you or I might deem vacuous bullshit to get likes that are functionally useless. But I see it more as people simply perceiving said posts as the norm. You check in wherever you go, announce major events in your life, or share minion memes because everyone else does it, and you are trying to fit in. You automatically try to cater your content to what you think or know gets you likes because you get a primal satisfaction of seeing a quantity increase as a direct consequence of your actions. Yes, there are narcissists who obsess about their quantities, but I hardly see the people in my friend's list as such. I mostly see them as sheep, but that's just like my opinion, man.

I also don't think people reward or have ever rewarded narcissism, humility, compassion, or anything like that. Rather, they reward actions: actions that they personally attribute to whatever they find virtuous or in any way positive. Makes more sense that way, as it is much easier to perceive what a person does than what they actually feel or how they really are. Being polite with your elders shows you respect them, but you can just as easily loathe them, but put on a facade of politeness nonetheless, because you don't want other people to get up your butt. You can be sad at your mother's funeral, but if you don't cry, or display your sadness in any palatable manner, people in general are not going to notice your sadness.

I find that Facebook, Instagram, twitter, etc. keeps people in a high school mentally. It creates echo chambers that reinforce their opinions whether or not they are rooted in fact. When every single person has a platform to speak their mind to a global audience, it creates an overwhelming desire to be noticed and accepted. IMO, over time this creates a narcissist approach to life.

I think the internet has given more of a voice to narcissists, I'm not exactly sure if its increased the amount of narcissists. I'm kind of disgusted of some aspects of modern culture pertaining to narcissism and general selfishness, there is much more focus on the self and materialistic and superficial interests more now than ever before. There is less focus on family or close relationships/friendships and more focus on how to improve yourself on an artificial level so you can collect the most resources or most amount of rewards. People want to extract as much reward as they can while offering up little in return. Its gross.

Social media doesn't breed narcissism it just gave a platform for people that way inclined to "dance" on. People will no doubt notice the loud obnoxious monkey throwing shit at walls over the quiet one sitting in the corner minding its own business.
