I have reason to believe that a lot of the time, the divorce isn't even about the material itself.

The thing is, how the assets and money are split is pretty fair and makes logical sense. If your wife is staying at home, carrying your babies and doing the housework, she is sacrificing time in which she could be building a career. It also prevents the person in power with the finances from just throwing her out on the street for nothing after 10 years of marriage.

This whole apples analogy falls flat at the fact that it doesn't talk about entering the marriage with a 10 apple lifestyle, then having the marriage become a 30 apple lifestyle and both people leave with 15, you'll almost with more than you had when it started, and having a spouse could have helped you get there.

Alimony and Child Support

My mother(sip's mom haha) had me with a guy who wanted nothing to do baby me at all(sorry guys, no abortion), this guy really did not give a shit. She didn't collect child support from him, even though she could have went after him for it and would have gotten awarded, she didn't do this because she wanted to move the fuck on. It makes it very difficult to just move on if you're paying your ex-spouse, that you probably didn't leave on the best terms with a large chunk of your paycheck, even though it is "fair" and makes sense.

Custody

This is the one that breaks my heart, hearing people talk about not being able to see their kids as much as they used to, rarely seeing their children or in some extreme cases never seeing their children again at all.

I don't know too much about how it works in the United States but in Canada child custody is based on:

  • The interest of the children

  • Parenting abilities

  • Schedule of both of the parents

  • Sibling issues

  • Mental, emotional and physical health

  • Available support systems

The list goes on. But the person who is at home taking care of the child will probably get the bigger end of the stick in custody, which isn't really a bad thing. It's just sad hearing the stories about these people who can't see their kids anymore.

I don't think a lot of people are opposed to marriage, I think they are just terrified of these extreme nightmare scenarios, because it does sound like a living Hell and it sounds very difficult to move forward from it.

My question is, is this antagonism towards marriage emotional or is it just purely based on "logic? I would really love to get some constructive answers and points of view.
