I like the idea of marriage being a contract that only lasts either 5, 7, or 10 years, and then it automatically expires. You can choose to renew the contract at the end of this time period or not.

Alimony is outdated and needs to go. Unfortunately, feminism has only gotten worse in proportion to the nose-diving of marriage statistics, so I doubt anything will be changed anytime soon.

The divorce rates in my country (Canada) have been pretty stable for the past 20 years, but I would still like to see some changes. I would like to see a more fair system when it comes to deciding custody - I think it's disgusting how hard it is for fathers to get primary custody. I don't think it's quite as bad where I live as most of the divorced couples I know share custody, but it still needs work.

I think men should have the option to abdicate parental rights/obligations and I think it should be tied to abortion timelines so a woman has all the facts before she chooses to go through with a pregnancy.

There needs to be more financial support for developing a trustworthy and easily available male contraceptive.

I don't think it's an issue that more people are living unmarried and having babies, providing those babies are wanted by both parties. I don't know all the ins and outs of common law marriage rules, but from what I understand they seem adequate as is. One thing we definitely need is more affordable daycare options so both parents can pursue meaningful careers (if that's what they want).

In terms of the OP - fewer people get married and more children are born out of wedlock, but I don't think it's true that more people get divorced. Marriages between university-educated couples are very stable, with maybe ~20% divorce rate. It's a considerably greater issue for lower class people, however.

There was a great article in The Economist on the topic of marriage and alternative contracts a few weeks ago (e.g. PACS in France, different types of common law arrangements). I agree with the point of the article, which is essentially that countries need to a) provide alternative contracts to marriages that couples can use to specify the arrangement they want and b) do more to make the public aware of the arrangements available. In the USA, for example, many people assume that they have "marriage-like rights" if they have been together for 7 years even though this is simply not the case and many states have ZERO common-law marriage!

In terms of children being born out of wedlock, my main concern is access to abortion. Access needs to be a very high priority so that couples don't get stuck paying for a child they didn't want. Access to abortion also decreases crime rates ~20 years after implementation, so that's awesome! For parents who decide to have children out of wedlock, I can't think of much to improve on how things run currently. Both parents have financial obligations to the child.

Remove the state role in marriage. The state had no business being involved anyways. It is a religious institution.

Since religious women tend to take marriage more seriously, divorce rate would also go down.

Custody during a divorce should be 50/50 by nature (unless one parent or the other doesn't want custody) and the assets earned by one party should remain theirs. Do that and I think some men would start marrying again.
