Why is it a woman's right to get an abortion, but it is not a man's right to get a vasectomy?

Women are often turned down by doctors for tubal ligations. Both are sterilization. What's your point?

Young women and men are routinely turned down for getting tubaligations (sp) and vasectomies. Those are probably more comparable.

You forgot to add "Before the age of 30 and without sperm in a sperm bank". They do the same thing for women who want to get their tubes tied. It is to protect their asses because reversing it doesn't always work and you may think you don't want kids in your 20's but some people, as they get older, decide that they DO want kids. Just keep it wrapped, that new pill for men will be out in the next few years. You don't have to go giving yourself a vasectomy in the meantime.

I dont know about turning down for vasectomies but I was in /r/childfree the other day and a woman wrote (and regularly do) about how she was basically turned down/chagrined by the medical staff for any possibly permanent sterilization procedures. Mainly because nobody wants to get sued or have someone make a hasty decision they'll regret.

How often does that happen and what reasons do the doctors cite? I'm searching for instances of this happening but having no luck (beyond genetic disease which can disqualify some men apparently), can you provide some sources?

Can you imagine the outrage if women were turned down by doctors for abortions?

Some people still try to mess with abortion access anyway they can. Respectable level of outrage over it though.

There are just so many other factors at play. It's not about "rights" after a certain point. It's about legality. Men have a RIGHT to a vasectomy just like doctors have the right to deny patients a specific surgery. You're conflating too many issues. There are places where people are attempting to enact laws that will limit the availability of abortion to women. I'm sure there are so many conditions around having voluntary surgery that most logically thinking doctors can't understand why you'd want to have a vasectomy instead of practicing safer sex.

Actually, women don't have a "right to abortion" in the US, at all. The STATES are prohibited from making laws banning abortion due to Roe v Wade which carved out a heretofore unknown "penumbra right to privacy" that apparently only applied to abortion and it was under the aegis of THIS right that state laws banning abortion entirely were found unconstitutional. Subsequent cases like Casey have modified Roe to allow for various state restriction of or requirements for abortion but it is still impossible for a state to make abortion illegal.

There is no "right" to have any surgical procedure let alone to have any specific surgeon perform any specific procedure against his will or his own advice

Personally I think it's a bit unfair, but women are often turned down from having their tubes tied as well. We live in a society that expects everyone to desire to have kids, so these procedures are denied with "You'll change your mind when you're older!"

Abortions on the other hand, terminate an existing pregnancy. It doesn't mean the woman can't become pregnant again, even though that seems to be a popular myth they have to tell them to scare them out of it...
