I've been ruminating on this for a few days, ever since that bestof post where a woman itemized her internal reactions to a fictitious event where a guy she didn't like pull her onto his lap. There was a post in TRP calling her broken and someone to be avoided. I thought this was unfair and unempathetic. TRP are bastards, really. We can never be the person who walks in another's shoes, but we could try.

The pressure to conform in social situations is HUUUGE! Can I say that again in Donald Trump's voice? YOOOOGE! Why do you think the advice to break up with someone is to do it at a nice public place? I've been to conferences where many times, I was sucked into a group dominated by a high social status speaker who was a gigantic bore. I couldn't leave. I could only nod politely and all the while try to work out a polite way or an excuse to GTFO. Did I have agency? Yes, absolutely? But I had to weigh the demerits of being rude and just leaving, and jussst another 5 minutes of not rocking the boat.

"Let me ask you something. Why don't people trust their instincts? They sense something is wrong, someone is walking too close behind them... You knew something was wrong, but you came back into the house. Did I force you, did I drag you? No. All I had to do was offer you a drink. It's hard to believe the fear of offending can be greater than the fear of pain but, you know what? It is, and they always come willingly."
