As the title says, what sort of things are you guys doing to not only increase your SMV but also build a more fulfilling life? Perhaps by sharing ideas we can inspire and help each other.
I'll start:
Things I am doing:
Chess- I played chess competitively growing up and was even really good, one of the best in the country for my age group. I fell out of it in high school and am now trying to get back into it. It's a slow burn and the most humiliating part is I am now, at age 21, a less capable player than I was at age 13. Hell, I might be worse than the 9 year old version of me. But I'm relearning opening theory, practicing a little every day, and playing a lot of correspondence chess.
For those who don't know much about chess, it is in many ways for the mind what lifting is for the body. It is one of the few ways that one can naturally increase one's IQ, it requires a great deal of focus and even determination.
Lifting- About 6 months ago I started lifting for the fifth or so time in my life. For the first time I actually stuck with it and have gone 3-5 times a week since. I'm currently doing Stronglifts 5x5 (with some accessory and plyometrics work as well) and have seen my big lifts increase considerably.
Basketball- I'm ]making a conscious effort to run full court a few times a week and shoot around before lifting. I have to say, lifting has helped my game tremendously. I used to be a typical white dude shooting threes and little else. I can now rebound, d up inside, and finish through contact.
Cooking- This is more out of necessity than volition but I've started to learn how to make some basic stuff such as (good) eggs, chicken, tacos etc.
Stuff I'd like to start doing:
French- I used to be proficient but haven't done much since high school. I think it might be a good idea to brush up on it and get back to proficient level.
Motorcyle/Pilot's license- I have two good leads that would help me get a start on either learning how to ride a motorcycle and/or fly a plane. My father was a longtime motorcycle rider and my retired uncle owns a couple of Cessnas which he flies constantly. I think if I took the summer after graduation to get a license it would be time well spent.
Mixing drinks- this one shouldn't take much time. I'm a big time drinker but can only make a couple of cocktails. I think it might be cool to take a bartending course or just buy a bartending book and teach myself the basics.
