Without seeing your body, it's hard to tell you which cuts will flatter it. Having said that, I'm curvy and I really like wrap dresses. I like that the neck shows a tiny bit of my cleavage while also accentuating my waist.

As to the coloring, I'm legit sad to think of you dying your black hair. Again, I haven't seen it, so I could be wrong, but from your description I see you dressed in deep, Royal colors. A true red. Royal blue with gold accents. But I don't actually know your "type."

If you are hourglass and have big breasts, you definitely need something that cinches in at the waist/ is fit and flare. Anything else will look boxy or frumpy or like a potato sack, or hug all the wrong places ! It's the worst. Once you find the dress cut flattering for your shape you can decide how low cut you want the top, and how short/long you want the bottom. I recommend scoop necks v necks or similar cuts. Anything high neck will just emphasize your chest or make you look saggier than you are. Aim for balance while showing off your assets. I wish I could help with actual brands or links but I have the hardest time finding flattering dresses as well. I only have like 2 and I got them both at Goodwill /value village. It's nice cause you don't have to spend a ton of you end up hating it. Just watch out for stains or holes/rips.

I also have an hourglass figure. Did you know that in terms of styling, the hourglass shape is what all the other shapes are trying to emulate? All the tricks of "how to dress for your body" are trying to create the illusion of an hourglass. That already gives us an advantage.

The other ladies are correct with their suggestions. Personally, I wear bodycon style dresses (not overly tight, but fitted dresses which hug all my curves) or A-line dresses. Anything that cinches in at the waist should work.

Add a cardigan, heels and accessories and you're good to go. In terms of colours, jewel tones sound as though they might work for you. Rich burgundy, purple, maroon, wine red, or, if you prefer cool colours, navy, royal blue, emerald green, teal. If you know that these absolutely don't work for you, then you know that the opposite will - light pastel tones, beige, light pinks and blues.

The best way to figure out what looks good is to go to the store and try on everything. All styles and colours. You will quickly see what works and what doesn't.

An important thing is to make sure that you are wearing the correct bra. Otherwise, the top part of your hourglass will look unbalanced.

I'm also curvier and what I've found works best is vintage/pin up style dresses! They were made with your body type in mind. Someone in this thread also mentioned wrap dresses and you can't go wrong with those.

For a while when I was trying to venture out with my clothes, I subscribed to Gwynnie Bee. You can select items and the company ships them to you one, two, or three at a time (different price rates) and you can keep what you like by buying it at a discount or mail it back when you are done. Once I found a specific brand that fit well and I was sure of my size, I would hop on Poshmark and get more of it at a cheaper price. I did this for about a year and really filled out my wardrobe.

Sorry I don't really have any fashion tips as I am also in the process of garnering more feminine pieces but I just wanted to say that I think jet black hair is gorgeous and such a defining feature!

I wear a corset to make my body look even curvier and to get closer to that ideal waist-hip ratio. orchard corsets are great for good quality affordable corsets in a variety of styles. As well as enhancing my waist, I also helps me feel more put together and makes me look taller thanks to the improvement in posture when I wear a corset.

Figuring out your colours will help loads, it makes the shopping process really easy since you immediately can rule out some items. Figuring out your style rules helps too, for instance, I don’t like wearing things with patterns on either, so that immediately means I won’t even look at lots of items. I watched a bunch of colour theory videos (there’s a French lady on YT who has a great selection of videos!) and additionally I liked the video That Feminine Housewife did on feminine dress.

As an aside, I’m trying to get more dresses into my wardrobe but I’m finding it extremely difficult to find suitable ones. Any suggestions would be welcomed (uk based or places that ship internationally!)

Please don't dye your hair. Many woman strive for that jet black hair - including me. I dye my hair black, but I naturally have dark brown hair. I also have olive toned skin and I think my skin and dyed hair go so well together. I'm also curvy at 5'4" and I recommend dresses that accentuate your waist. You can also buy some midi skirts that go up to your waist and include some cute booties or sandals depending on the weather. I dress pretty girly in the summer, but where I live the cold is brutal in winter.

I've recently been updating my wardrobe to include some sweater dresses and they look adorable with some black tights and cute boots. Buy dresses with a decent neck line and if the dress is too revealing, maybe add a cute scarf to cover it that day. I find a lot of cute items online at Lulus and in stores like Express. Go for basic colors that go well with your skin tone. I really look good in olive green, dark green, maroon, jewel tones, and I even incorporate some gray and beige colors - although that's a bit harder depending on the outfit.

To think about you dyeing your hair makes me so sad! It sounds like you've got some beautiful coloring that would really lend itself to wearing pretty jewel tones. I also have olive/neutral toned skin, but my hair is more dark brown than black, and it's kind of weird. Black really ties the whole look together.

The ladies here have already given you some fantastic advice about dress cuts. The key with the hourglass is to emphasize the difference between shoulders/hips and the waist. So anything cinched in is best. I'm curvy (but also overweight), so I like a nice modest wrap dress or a-line. I'm also guilty of loving a t-shirt dress look, but that's not the most flattering look. In daily wear, I like high waisted skirts or pants, usually with a top tucked in to emphasize the waist.

I don't know if you've looked into Kibbe typing, but you might find some inspiration there about dressing for your body type!

I like long dresses (sundresses) and keep a cardigan or shawl, bright jewel tones are so much fun in a sundress and they are affordable and versatile.
