My little grey baby was abused before I got her and she's always been a scaredy cat. She usually hides when she hears a male voice. "The New Dude" has spent the past 10 months trying to win her trust, being so gentle and dealing with her reaction to being startled which is usually to claw the shit out of someone.
Today she came running into the kitchen being chased by her brother and went right to my dude for help even though I was standing there. Also she let him pick her up today for the first time.
It really melted my heart seeing my twitchy hurt kitty reaching out to another human. "New Dude" is the only other person she's let hold her since I rescued her....she won't even allow my cat-loving besties to pick her up.

Awww that's so nice!!! I have had cats all my life (family pets) and just a couple months ago got my own. If I ever go back to dating, I'll be making it very clear me and my cats (I plan to get a second) are a package deal and they'll always be picked first!

I actually never intended to have another pet... too much heartbreak after losing my 18 year old dog I'd had since she was a baby pupper.
The cats were honestly just a last-straw solution to my house's mouse problem after traps and absolutely everything else I tried failed. Then I went to the shelter, saw poor abused grey baby and fell in love and just HAD to take her home to a safe place, the shelter people said she'd been doing better since they'd put the little tuxie abandoned kitten in with her so I took them both.
I wasn't even expecting mouse removal services after that, I got really invested in giving that poor grey baby a place to feel like home.
As it turns out though, both floofs are awesome at rodent reduction....surprisingly it's my little grey who gets the MOST kills, while tuxie furball gets the prize for "messiest mouse murders" .... she'll bring me a body to show me and then she'll actually take it outside in the yard. If I come home to a horrible mess on the carpet, I know my tuxie did it.
They are such a joy with their little quirks and sweetnesses. Now I can't imagine a life without them. There's nothing quite like a lap full of purring furball.
I've become very much a "Love me, love my cats" person.... I'm so glad dude is so invested in being part of their lives too... he's worked so hard to get grey baby over her fear of men and it's WORKING.
This morning was epic watching her go to him and then let him pick her up. She's been coming back every so often all today and "asking" for pickups again too. 😻 I'm so happy. I really thought she'd never let anyone else hold her.
Tuxie was easier, you could be a Republican and he'd still let you have pets if you give him his favorite treats for a bribe. He's my greedy baby.

As far as I am concerned, being kind to animals is a prerequisite of being a good person and HV in general. Even for people who don't love animals, if they are HV people they treat them with kindness whenever they have to interact with them. If I see a man mistreating ANY animal at all, I run

I'm going to be the voice of discord here, because I see what looks like real belief that animals like HVM, or that if your pet likes your guy, that in itself is a sign of an HVM? One of the most common ways for one person to abuse another is through pets, because pets make it soooo easy. They don't know good from bad intentions. An animal's reaction to a person is not a reliable indication of a human's intentions. Animals do not have character judgement or complicated standards. I hope that's not what you are saying. You would be badly misinformed, at the least. Or chasing windmills, at worst.

You are very right....
Just critters liking a man is no serious guarantee that he's a good human and also good DUDE that you should be with.
Although any man who mistreats animals should be an automatic HELL NO! The other side of the coin is: "Just because animals like a man doesn't mean an automatic HELL YES!"
Here's my personal situation criteria though... if it were just my tuxie who liked my new dude I could dismiss that as "Tuxie would like a serial killer if they had treats to give him" so it wouldn't be impressive to me.
I'm so big-time over the moon about this because my little grey baby hates all men, is so twitchy and scared and standoffish with everyone and won't let anyone but me pick her up until today.... so my dude has been trying so hard for months to win her trust and today it finally worked.
He's been spending most of this year trying to prove to my sweet grey girl that he won't hurt her, and now she's starting to believe it and looking at him like he's a "safe person" ...he IS... but he needed to prove that to her and he did.

Aw that is so sweet! I feel similar about my skittish 15-pound bodyguard of a dog :3 A man who will take the time to earn the trust of an animal is showing good behavior.

Just FYI, my tuxie kitty is a total jerk in the mornings... chases his sister around, stands on my head and howls for wet food even though there's always a full bowl of cat crunchies. Does the zoomies right by the coffeemaker to trip the sleepy humans. I think floof knows I'm not a morning person and in true asshole cat fashion he likes to make morning FUN.

Any man saying he doesn't like cats is a red flag for me.
Cats are very selective with who they trust. They don't hand out unconditional love blindly. No wonder LVM hate them.
