My boyfriend is full of contempt for me but won't end the relationship. I'm stuck anxiously waiting for the break up.

My boyfriend and I have been together for over 4 years with a year apart. He broke up with me after I graduated from college and moved away back with my parents. He had one more semester left and had a job lined up downstate. The distance and different life situations contributed, along with the fact I was throwing a bunch of red flags. I have an anxious preoccupied attachment style, clingy, no hobbies or interests outside the the relationship. I'm still like this to a degree today.

I dated another guy during that time and he remained single as far as I'm aware, although he may have had a fling or two.

We got back together after he moved back to my long story short, he ended up unemployed and I helped support him during his job search. I grew on him during this time and we both ended up with new jobs where we now commute together and see each other pretty much every day. I don't "officially" live with him, but I stay at his apartment most of the time.

I struggle with asserting myself and showing my personality. I'm extremely soft spoken. My boyfriend has a very strong character. He's very much a jokester and very outspoken.

Lately he's been obviously dissatisfied with me to the point I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop, so to speak. He's said some things that have taken a hammer to the relationship on my end and now I have so much anxiety around him I don't know if I can give this my all.

He said last week after i failed to order something online for him "You have no personality. At the very least, I need a helper, but I don't even get that. I feel trapped. I deserve better."

I was so stunned I couldn't respond properly at the time. I was expecting him to end the relationship since he essentially gave me a break up speech, but he HASN'T. Instead he's been doubling down on telling me he's "happy with me," asking if I'm ok, and telling me he appreciates me. I finished up his laundry the other day and he gave me a big hug and said I was a sweetie pie and that I'm a blessing. I have such emotional whiplash that I don't know what's up or down.

The other day we were driving and I laughed and accidentally spit in his eye. he said "You're gross. You WOULD give me caronavirus with all the stupid shit you do." He then apologized and said that it was abrasive of him.

He texts me he misses me when I'm at my parents and doesn't want me to leave when I do leave.

I'm at my wit's end with the back and forth and I don't have a secure sense of self so it's difficult for me to address the contempt and hostility when it comes up. I already know that the relationship is on life support, but I can't fathom why he isn't ending it already. I do love him and he suggested couples counseling but I don't know if that's even an option now.
