Before he came to the U.S., my grandfather was a jeweler by trade. He was journeyman studying metalwork and gem cutting.

When he was young, he won the lottery in his country and was able to buy the shop where he worked. He took every cent of his earnings and invested them into his livelihood. He bought the shop where he was studying his trade, and began extensive renovations of the property to modernize it and make it attractive. The shop was in a prime location with a lot of foot traffic (a narrow pedestrian avenue - no cars) and lots of other shops along the strip.

My grandfather turned that business into a jewel of the city. His reputation as an honest, forthright dealer earned him great renown in the community. People would come from across the bay by ferry (passing several other larger gold and gemstone dealers along the way) just to do business with him. They knew they would get the best price for the finest work.

People on the street would address him as "Master". It was an honourific title. He wasn't just a skilled jeweler. He was a highly respected figurehead in the community, sought after for his expertise, his wisdom, and his leadership. And all of the respect and courtesy he was afforded by the community made him want to give back twofold. It was a self-sustaining positive social feedback loop that kept the community strong and growing.

It was my grandfather's intent to pass on the family business to his son or grandson, that he might carry on the tradition.

Western countries rarely observe such traditions; and they certainly don't hold such respect for men any longer.

What is the role of the modern man in the 21st century? I think it will be whatever he damn well pleases.

Men no longer have masculine role models to pass down businesses and traditions. Men are no longer held in high regard for the contributions they make to their community's prosperity. There is no feedback loop in place to incentivize men to contribute to their communities and cultures any longer.

So men will work to please themselves.

Problem is, society survives on the cooperation of self-sacrificing and goal-oriented men.

With men abandoning large-scale cooperation in the interest of pursuing smaller-scale self-fulfilling ambitions, society will slowly unravel, strand by strand. The smart men will abandon the sinking ship, and without its smart men that society will unravel faster, leaving the parasites to wonder how they ever got to this position in the first place, and why won't the men just fix the problem so they can have their free cookies again?

And that's why we're here. To find our individual purposes, and to ready ourselves for the unraveling.

I will speak bluntly on this; human life is very cheap, and only getting cheaper.

Science allows us to do far more with less, and population has already grown to levels where we could lose a couple billion and barely miss a step.

The only people that will truly be important are upper level scientists and engineers; at least until AI kicks off. What has been true for some time now will become even more true in the coming decades; politicians, businessmen, and the like all derive their actual power from the technical ability under them. They are themselves quite replaceable otherwise. MBAs and lawyers cannot create nukes, or feed a populace. Drop Steve Jobs a thousand years into the past and you might get a well run company. Drop Elon Musk and you will end the dark ages.

So in the sense of accruing power, and especially since most people lack the aptitude to do science, it will be important to put yourselves in a position over those STEM people.

Here's the problem. Did you ever ask yourself what the role of women is in the 21st century?

I remember reading the 'End of Man' (Hana Rosin) and yes she basically goes through the same thing. We don't need men to do as much work anymore.

But here's a point that she never even explores. It's a point you don't even consider worth mentioning.

What is the role of women in the future? Can you as a man cook, clean, take care of children...? My guess would be most modern men can do all these things. About the only use of a woman today is that she can give birth. But that too can be outsourced and most likely we can grow babies artificially (Egg doners...).

I honestly tire of all these focus on what it means to be a man when no one bothers to even ask what it means to be a woman. Just the other day, I was in conversation with a religious relative of mine who is all about hyper masculinity. Men work. Men provide. Manly men. He can cook. He can clean. he is decent with children. Meanwhile, he is married to a fat, lazy, loud women who doesn't really do very much...

I get it. There is some real questions with respect to what it means to be a man. But at least have that question in your head as to what it means to be a woman. As far as I can tell, both genders have lost their identity.

Yet, do people focus as much about the end of women the moment men learned to cook, washing machines become affordable, men learn to take care of children...

The way I see it is that being a man means handling your shit. That's it.

I suspect the way forward is to accept that people are entitled to something for nothing. Maybe guaranteed jobs. Maybe guaranteed income. The alternative is scary (mass unemployment, social unrest...) But that's how it may end up because the idea of paying a man to do nothing is so horrible to so much of society.

This is something that I think about, and I think about a lot; and that's also part of what brought me to TRP.

We need to distinguish if you are looking for The average MAN, or if you are looking for that minority of Very Special MEN.

The average MAN is doomed, you can look around and see the majority of guys out there represent the average man: out of shape, married in an unhappy marriage or divorced-raped, in a job that's unfulfilling; trying desperately to keep up with the Johnses. Still.

Special MEN and Very Special MEN will always find their way to fulfill their dream life. They walk the tight line between adapting to circumstances and creating their own future. I am not talking about those who will be come President of the USA or multi billion dollars CEOs.

I am talking about those MEN who:

1) are fit because they lift and lift heavy

2) can't get enough of knowledge and reading

3) they end up being entrepreneurs and their parents don't understand what is exactly that they are doing.

Off the top of my head Matthew Inman comes to mind (The Oatmeal), although I am not sure if he's fit or not. And although I don't really like the message, Tim Ferriss is another one and I know that he's fit.

At the end of the day we all need to make a choice: follow an establish path (job, marriage, etc..) or to to create our own path, be pioneers of our own lives. This overall principle has not changed much, but what I see now is that the average MAN out there lives a Life of quiet desperation.

There are too many people in general.

WW3 is possible. China, Russia, Iran, etc are rising while the West is dying.

Feminism via smartphone is spreading to all corners of the globe.

Free speech is over and the world is a surveillance state.

Dystopia is coming soon. Depression and war are likely.

The best option is probably to side with the most powerful army/country/company/organization and offer them something of value.

Game = staying alive to repopulate in the aftermath. And not destitute or imprisoned by authorities.

Your only choice as an individual in a polarized system is to be better. Simple as that. People like to say that competition is growing more harsh with each passing year, but I disagree

Competition at the very peak of humanity might be growing significantly, but you don't need to be in the top .01% to be a successful human being. The average human is getting lazier, fatter, and is less willing to compete so it's much easier to go from top 50% to top 25%.

You don't need to bench 300 lbs to be considered strong. Benching 150lbs makes you stronger than the majority of the population. Yeah, you're far behind the peak, but it's better than nothing. You'll still be healthier, look better, and be stronger than most people which gives you an enormous advantage in all situations in life.

The future will be more or less the same. The qualities necessary for man's success and happiness are timeless. That's why we are still reading Marcus Aurelius today.

Yet, what is changing, and maybe now even faster than ever before is technology. And we are afraid, the same as when man was afraid of the printing press. Even I, a very young man, miss the days before the Internet.

Bitcoin is a thing right now, but will it be? Time will tell. Same with entrepreneurship and open source philosophy. We must prepare ourselves for these new challenges ang get the most out of them.

Wealth inequality is not at all time high- the poor are just more greedy. Compare to the middle ages. At least in civilized countries.

We need to prepare ourselves for future challenges and show no fear. They will be heard and it will be many, but I believe we will overcome them

Those are not facts.

Technology has always resulted in a net increase of human labour.
Certain government institutions may be able to gather massive amounts of data from online – personally I doubt they can do much of anything useful with it.
There are fewer wars than at pretty much any time in history.
Globally the poor are becoming richer at an unprecedented pace and inequality is decreasing. The rich are also becoming richer, and locally in some countries inequality is increasing - but that is to be expected in a rapid increasing economy.

In short, life is better than at any time in history.

The world is currently in a process of integration. Where formerly societies were split into insular entities, we are witnessing the globalization of everything. Culture, norms, religion, technology, etc.

The internet leads to memes and ideas being spread very rapidly and an increase in the efficiency of finding the best solution to most problems.

In my opinion, by 2050 we will be seeing a largely unified world with very little restrictions on immigration, extreme globalisation, and a corporate-government managed by relatively transparent, rational processes.

Socially, we will likely see a resurgence of younger marriage, and more focus on masculinity for men and clearer gender roles, something that went out of fashion with disastrous results.
