My Situation:
I thought I was ready for a girl to 'break my heart', I put that in quotes because I thought it wouldn't be possible for my heart to be broken...but it has happened. I have known this girl since 8th grade (I am now 20 years old), we have been consistently talking for 7 years now, and we dated for 3 and a half.
I found this subreddit a while back, maybe a year, and read up on what message is trying to be conveyed here. Since I have found it I have began working out and have an above average body, I am pursuing a software engineering degree, and I try to constantly be busy and doing something. As a natural introvert this is hard for me, my brain likes to think...think about the past and about the future. I know I have a good future ahead of me, I am smart financially, I do well in college, I read, I have great self-discipline which has helped me get the body I have so far and will have in the future. I thought that I would be ok without this girl because of the path I was on. But then it happened, two and a half months ago she broke up with me.
She said that we aren't right for each other right now. She likes to party 5 nights a week, she doesn't really have any motivation to make her future self happy, it is all about the now for her. So in a way she is right, I like to make myself better and be the best version of myself and as mentioned earlier I am a natural introvert, so I prefer to hang out with smaller groups of people when I do go out. Don't get me wrong I like to drink and have fun with friends, but maybe once or twice a week. But this doesn't mean we don't have great memories, and if I am being honest the happiest I have ever been in my life is the peak of our relationship. We also had plans for our future, and even though I didn't think we were going to break up because we had these plans, I began to try and become happy by myself because I never knew what was going to happen, and sure enough something has happened.
I have given myself 2 months to grieve, no matter what I think it is impossible to not be distraught about a relationship seven years in the making come to an end. But I am still incredibly sad. I would go as far to say as I am depressed as I pretty much force myself to eat and force myself to do something despite having no interest in anything. Despite my beliefs that I was ready for a break up, I am not. I think about her pretty much every second of every day. If I do manage to do something that makes me forget about her, it is just worse after I am done with whatever that activity is. The best way I can describe it is that I finish the activity and I am in a good mood, I am thinking that life is great, but then I realize that I don't get to go home and see my girlfriend or send her a text and I get absolutely crushed and almost instantly feel like crying.
Going Forward:
If I am not crying about losing this girl, than I am crying because of what lies ahead in the future. I have had 3 girlfriends in my life, the other 2 I had while I was talking to the girl this post is about. One of them managed to last an entire year, and the other lasted about 2 months. What all these girls have in common is that they have come to me. I was an athlete in high school so girls just talked to me (I realize this is a humble brag but it is an actual problem). Because of this, I have never learned how to approach girls.
So now I am sitting here worrying about how I am going to find other girls. I am attracted to relationships, casual sex with a girl has never really seemed appealing to me. The reason for this is pretty obvious, almost everyone in my family met their wife/husband when they were a teenager. And when I say almost everyone, I am talking about more than 10 people in my family met their spouse in their teens. This includes uncles, cousins, brothers, and even my parents. I think because of this I am attracted to relationships.
I see so many lonely dudes on reddit talking about suicide and how they just want someone to be with, and I am scared shitless that I am going to be one of those guys. I know I am only 20 years old and I shouldn't be worrying about that, but it is really hard for me to shake these emotions.
Takeaway:
I realize that this has so far just been a complaint post, I am just really hoping for some advice. But I can also give some advice, and that is to never assume you will be ok. Keep getting better, keep getting new hobbies, keep building friendships. Never assume that you are going to be ok on your current path. You don't want to end up like me, this is the absolute low point in my life.
