I guess I didn't realize how this is fake, since I was put through this with my ex. I put her through college and supported her while she tried to land a career job. I was a fucking magician with money to actually pay things down on the one income while all she had to do was go to college. I sacrificed my wants and needs to maintain a lifestyle for her and keep up her hobbies so that she didn't burn out. I was put through hell by her once she was established, drove me near to suicide, and set me back years psychologically. Left me for the first person she spent any time with in her new job. She got pissed when I explained how she used me, refused to pay me anything. She still behaves with a complete lack of awareness of my sacrifice and has yet to at the very least properly thank me for anything I did to make her life possible. I still have no degree, it was supposed to be the next step. That's actually how I found this subreddit a year ago.

I've seen this happen a whole load of times in my peer group.
