You may have dodged a bullet with your plan, Dream_21. In certain states there is one problem: those states that recognize common law marriages. In those states, presenting or holding yourself out to be married, or even living together for a cartain amount of time (varies by state) and co-mingling finances means the state will consider you married, and breaking up is equivalent to divorce. Courts can order division of assets, alimony, the whole 9 yards.

Before anyone tries this, they should make sure they don't live in a state with common law marriage.

Note also that the same thing can happen in Australia, where federal law stipultes the equivalent of US common law marriage, calling it De Facto marriage, and in certain provinces in Canada too.

Consulting with a lawyer to be sure all your ducks are in order is a good idea. Did you work with a lawyer and/or draw up a Cohabitation Agreement?
