This is derived directly from Own Your Shit. Modern culture loves the victim mentality. Any excuse to shift blame from your own shortcomings to a convenient malady is readily used and sometimes even celebrated. We, the unplugged, are better than this.

Body: Avoiding Victim Mentality

This generally boils down to one simple rule:

DEER.

Most RP men will see DEER as a communication tool: don't defend, explain, excuse, or rationalize.

However, you need to apply this tool to your inner dialogue to fully eradicate victim mentality. If you find yourself DEERing to yourself, you're probably falling into a victim mentality.

-Example-

"I can't help that I didn't go to the gym today. I can't really work out with my knee messed up from squats, but I'll make up for it by not drinking tonight."

Clearly the DEERing is visible here, and if you're thinking this to yourself, what you're really doing is hamstering. You are a victim to your leg, and powerless to fix it, so it's not really your fault you failed tonight, right?

Solution

Don't DEER. If you're lazy and skip the gym, you fucked up, but don't hamster it to make yourself feel better. Own up to your mistake and fix it. If you're truly injured, find a work-around or take action towards recovery.

"As we think, so shall we become."

"As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."

"Our thoughts today become our actions tomorrow."

By extension, be able to spot victim mentality in others. This will help you spot people that will bring your quality of life down. You can't hold everyone to your standards of perfection, but know where to draw the line. If you are a MRP and have kids, call your kids out when they play the victim card. If you're in an LTR, call out victim mentality in your SO. A gentle reframing of the situation can help remind those around you, and yourself, that we all are 100% responsible for our own destinies.
