Thinking that anyone should accept you as you are is very selfish way of thinking. Would you do the same to the other person? I don’t think not many would do, but rather they want others do it unconditionally. Work on yourself and be better. That’s key.

My ex once told me something along the lines of “I can’t change who I am.” And that honestly felt weird to me, but I choose foolishly to ignore it at the time instead of recognizing the red flag that it was.

Who he was was someone who could not deal with conflict on basically any level. We never fought, and I realized later that it wasn’t because we agreed or had a respectful discussion, it was because he just didn’t want to say how he really felt. So instead he bottled it all up until he went into full panic mode and just ended our relationship.

Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way, maybe it really was just that he didn’t value our relationship like I did. Even though every single one of his actions up until that point said otherwise.

He talked about marriage and kids. He talked about us vacationing in Europe. Then suddenly he’s breaking up with his girlfriend of over a year and telling her he doesn’t ever want children. But if he’d actually talked to me about it he had learned having kids isn’t a priority for me either. I like the idea, but it’s not something I need to do to be happy. That wasn’t his only excuse. They only got more and more deplorable from there.

Obviously emotional maturity was seriously lacking, and some other traits were lacking too in retrospect. I’m just having a hard time even fathoming going out in the dating world again. I put so much time and energy into that relationship. I have trust issues with men in general and this man put in all the time and effort to build my trust and help me overcome anxieties so we could be together. Then out of nowhere he just jumps ship saying all these things that don’t make sense and then literally ghosts me.

I just don’t know how to come back from that. It definitely hit my self esteem, made me question my judgement. I honestly do think I can trust myself so see when someone is being disingenuous romantically.

The struggle is real.
