What do you do in order to be safe when dating?

When I used to online date, I would always tell someone where I was going and who I would be with for how long. Also allowing someone you trust to see your location in case of an emergency. I allow my best friend to always locate me in case I go missing.

I use a fake but similar name on OLD. My own name is unconventional although I did ask someone to look me up on social media just using my weird first name and they couldn't find me. I never tell people where I work. I don't give out my number until I feel comfortable and somehow that has worked for me. I really should use whatsapp or something instead of my actual number. I don't let them know where I live until we're dating exclusively. I don't go to their home until I'm ready to have sex. I've been extremely lucky. I feel like I'm very good at vetting people, but I have definitely been careless. I'm going to be even better in 2020.

Have your own transportation to the date. That way, he does not see where you live but you also have your own way out if the date goes bad or he ends up being creepy.

When I dated online, I would ask to face time or Skype my dates before we met. I never was surprised that they weren't who they said they were on a date, and I could get a feeling for if I was going to feel comfortable around them or not. Most guys were happy to do it too.

When I was living at home with my parents, I'd have to give them the guy's name and age before I left, just in case anything happened. I'd usually text a friend the information if I didn't want to share it with my family.

Drive yourself, don't let them pick you up. I got into a car once and the guy turned to me and said "just so you know, I have roughly 8 knives in this car and a disassembled handgun," I've never felt more instantly uncomfortable on a date.

NEVER go alone to a house full of guys. I have done this a few times and took a lot of unnecessary risk. The first time, I went to meet a guy who was smaller and shorter than me (I'm roughly 6 feet tall). I felt safe going to meet him because I wasn't intimidated by his size. As soon as I stepped into his house though, I met his 2 roommates, both 6'3 or taller, 200lb+ men. They were nice guys but not all men are.

Meet in public the first couple of times, it takes the pressure off of you and keeps you safe. Make sure he doesn't follow you home after your date.

Consider not giving out your phone number and all of your social media. You only need one or maybe two means of communication to set up a date. If he turns out to be sketchy, you don't want to have to block him on everything or have to change your phone number.

Last but certainly not least, listen to your gut. If you feel panicked or unsafe at any point with a date, you can leave. Don't worry about being polite, don't worry about making a scene, if you feel you are in danger, leave immediately. He doesn't always need to be given a reason either.

The story of Junko was just horrible. She literally died just for IIRC saying no to dating (not just that guy but period) in favor of focusing on her studies.

To add to what's already been said, do NOT leave your food/drink unattended. Don't drink anything he brings to you especially if you didn't witness it being prepared. If you have to leave the table, finish that drink before you leave it or get a new one when you return.

I use Google Voice number instead of real number. Let someone know who/where I'm going.
