I spent a decade in a marriage thinking I was a bad communicator. Guess what? I somehow manage to successfully communicate with friends and co-workers. And I have navigated the last several years of my life in relative success, communicating my needs clearly to men and women alike.
Definitely consider this line a red flag.

Actually I’m kinda glad I thought up something so ridiculous. Because thinking I’d need to resort to something so pathetic made me really reevaluate whether I was the one with the communication issue.
I’m sure there were loads of other times I communicated something clearly and he didn’t listen. But because he had me believing so hard that I was a bad communicator I just assumed it was a me problem and I needed to try harder, etc. I didn’t question it.

Dude. I literally went to therapy because my abusive ex kept telling me I was a bad partner and couldn't communicate. By that, he meant, couldn't read his mind.

The therapy helped me learn to set boundaries, but I stayed with him for 2 more years until he got physically violent with me.

My ex told me to communicate more all the time. Now granted, I actually did have a problem with not always telling him when something bothered me... Because I knew he didn't listen. I could communicate well, but it's not going to matter if he doesn't care enough about how I feel to do anything about it. Sometimes there's not even a point in communicating.
