Grad student here. In my area, I've noticed an inextricable link between status/SMV and your ability to be the "funny guy"--the guy whose jokes everyone laughs at, the one who can raise his hand in class to make a comment and everyone will listen. And then everyone will laugh. The guy who can captivate people with his stories about random shit, but the chicks eat it up like catnip.

I've been keenly listening to one such funny guy in my class for a while now, and from my perspective his shit isn't funny. And I'm not saying that out of jealousy or anything--I just don't genuinely find him interesting or funny. But for whatever reason, the girls of my class think he's hilarious.

Appearance wise, he's nothing special. He doesn't have any visible gains and he's got an average face. He's just the kind of guy who will speak up when no one else has anything to ask and somehow it's humorous. Shit doesn't make any sense.

So what's the lesson I should learning from this guy? Is it possible I lack a sense of humor and need to get a better one? Or do the women just laugh at anything he says because his SMV is high enough?
