You need to be an attractive guy; if you are, women will automatically think you're funny even if your jokes are atrocious, awkward, vitriolic, condescending, politically incorrect or whatever else there is (including plain unfunny).

As a fellow graduate student, I got advice for you:

Every friday night and hopefully saturday night(basically 2 nights a week), CLOSE GOOGLE SCHOLAR, CLOSE LATEX, CLOSE SPONSOR EMAILS, CLOSE PI ORDERS and GO OUT. Please do this. Graduate school is designed to suck life out of you, even if you love what you do. Take time out to go out. I see too many grad students settling for 5-6s when they know they are going to graduate and make 120k+ just because they were stuck in the scarcity of being in grad school.
You are a graduate student. Focus more on the content in the class than this dude or chicks. Be fully immersed in the content and learn. This isn't undergrad: You are here because you actually like this stuff and want to make a contribution in the field. For girls: see step 1.

Answer to the last question is yes. It has very little to do with the quality of his comedy and a lot more to do with his social value. Don't try to be the funny guy, work on your value until people find you equally entertaining and funny.

You don't need to be the funny guy. Sometimes funny guys are compensating for an insecurity.

Don't get me wrong humor is great but don't be a try hard.

Now being a good story teller on the other hand is one of the best qualities you can have. To be able to captivate an audience of intent listeners is powerful. Women love that shit.

Part of being funny is not what you say, but who you say it to. Some people can appreciate a good Hitler joke while others would find you to be unfunny and tasteless, so it could be that the audience he has have a different taste than you do.

From there, it's your style. I'm not the very loud and screaming type so my humour is mainly in witty comebacks and observational humour. Sometimes in story telling as well.

So you need to see what kind of humour fits you and your personality best.

On girls though, I do found that my humour gets me attention, and it does get girls interested (whether I'm alone with them or in a group). So I would recommend you working on this.

Just have other qualities as well so you don't end up becoming the clown.

If you're SMV is high enough, girls will laugh at seemingly unfunny jokes. They'll also joke more themselves and assume you were going to make a joke and respond to it before you've spoken back during a conversation, referencing jokes in their head that you could have made in that situation. They'll do more work and fill in some of the gaps for you.

You can raise your SMV with humor if you get good at it as it may elevate prestige, one style of status. But you can also increase your SMV other ways and girls will laugh anyway. Laughter, out of a lot of things, can be a response to tension, releasing tension, not necessarily a response to something funny.

So you want to be a class clown? Having a sense of humor and being a comedian for entertaining purposes are two different things.

My sensor of humor was shaped from a variety of sources:

Youth: Mad Magazine, Bill Cosby, George Carlin, Jackie Gleason, Looney Tunes.

Teen: Cheech and Chong, Firesign Theater, National Lampoon

Adult: SNL - the first 4 years, Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Lewis Black, Dave Chappelle.

Don't think of it as being the "funny guy". You need to look at the big picture. That guy is just being generally charming. Watch his body language, voice inflection, gestures, everything. Also, is he the only one in the class who behaves this way? If so, people are attracted to people who put themselves out there and don't give a fuck what people think. If no one else is talking or telling stories, of course he's going to seem interesting in comparison.

What's the old saying -- "Ya gotta have a schtick"? For the funny guy, that's his schtick. If you're not naturally witty, maybe you need to find a different one. What's your best feature and how can you enhance it?
