I have a policy of not engaging with female co-workers beyond work related issues. My rules are: no friendship, minimize small talk, no smiles, humor or chivalrous acts. This has served me well. One time this saved me a ton of trouble.

A few years ago I worked part-time as a low level manager to supplement my income. We hired a woman who seemed normal enough. I could tell that she didn't really like her job. But she was generally a good employee (though she called in a lot). I later discovered that her parents were forcing her to work under threat of totally cutting off their financial support.

As per tradition, I kept my distance while being casually polite. After several months of work, she quit. After the fact, she MeToo'd all of the male management staff and some of the male employees. I was the only male manager on staff who wasn't accused.

I don't know if she was telling the truth about being sexually harassed/assaulted and that isn't the point of my story. The point is that while everyone was surprised about the accusations, no one was surprised that I was the only male manager who didn't get accused.

I recommend all of you adopt a similar policy. You can still get accused, but you want it to be so obvious that your hands are clean that the idea of you having done something wrong doesn't even enter people's minds. Even if everyone else is MeToo'd.
