I’m (36M) feeling that it may finally be time to divorce my (36F) wife. I’m pretty depressed by this but feel that there can be no future for us. She blames me for all of her unhappiness and lack of success.
We’ve been together for 17 years and married for 5 now. Before marriage, we definitely had our ups and downs, but worked through them all. After marriage, it’s been a slow, downhill, roll. Each year is worse than the previous one.
She’s been diagnosed with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. God knows from what since I’ve known her most of her adult life. I truly believe she’s something closer to bipolar, but she won’t even consider that. She won’t work either.
She tells her family that I am the reason that she doesn’t have a job or any calling in life. When I ask her to give me examples, she just generalizes, screams, and tells me that I’m a master manipulator. Can’t give me any examples. I’ve noticed that the more successful I’ve become, the more insecure she’s become. I went from being an intern to being the Manager of Engineering making well into the 6 figures...She is a stay at home wife with no kids and makes zero.
There is zero sex and zero affection from her. When I finally got the courage to say something, she just gaslighted me.
Whenever I try to talk to her about our dying marriage, she gets incredibly hostile. I’ve suggested counseling, and for her to pick someone, but she refuses.
I know it seems easy to suggest that she just needs to find her calling, but the problem here is that she blames me for being in the way of it.
I’m 36 and want a family. I am afraid that if I keep doing the same old thing (taking the blame for who knows what) that I’ll get too old for a family with someone else. I just know that my life partner can’t be a this.

Trusting another is a big worry for me too. My wife wasn’t always like this, she was my other half for many many years. I believe that she slowly began to despise my successes while she had multiple failures. That’s what I truly believe is the heart of it. While she gets turned down for an interview, I’m getting multiple offers. I think some mental illness is complicating things by shutting down communication so that I couldn’t see this shit forming.
That’s why I’d wind up incredibly picky. A girl would need to be pretty well evenly matched to me as far as income and prestige goes (I promise I’m not as arrogant as I sound). That way, I’d at least know there wasn’t any jealousy. The problem with this is that a good looking girl that makes good money and has a great job should be married at the ages that I’d be interested in. If not, red flag? Catch22.
I know, for sure, I want a family and that my wife needs to be my best friend (so there goes arranged marriages)This isn’t going to be easy...GD, how did it all go wrong?

You and I sound pretty similar. If you can afford it, I would look into counseling. It has helped so much.

I’ve tried. She would rather be the victim. She thinks that IM the one with the problem yet can’t give a single example. She’s your typical gaslighter whenever she’s faced with her failures.

Oh yeah. I meant counseling just for yourself after your divorce. Forgot that part, sorry.

I figure that a girl making 6 figures also knows how to handle herself. Few jobs that pay that well put up with immature bs.

She most definitely likes to play the victim. Her own parents even admit this. She’s very self centered...
She hasn’t always been like this, so I’m still trying to have the “main event” and come to terms with what her true feelings are and what she is willing to do about them. If she’s willing to actually work on everything, I’ll work on them too. For one, she used to be on a medication that I cannot remember. It was for anxiety and depression. I’m thinking her stopping this was a horrible idea. Her stupid psychiatrist wouldn’t talk to me about it when I called.
If she wants to just keep grandstanding, I’ll probably line up an attorney and see what I can do ahead of time.

Touché.
Guess I’m having a hard time getting used to the idea. It’s been 17 years together in total. In the beginning, we were close friends. She was a very different person too. She did a great job hiding the self centered personality and we were very much alike.
Any benefit to letting her file for divorce over me just going for it? I think that if we separate, Im going to get antsy about needing closure. Or is this just a hail marry to see if she’ll change?

I know that I can do better as far as material and physical qualities go, just afraid about the whole soul mate thing. Yup, I’m a bitch like that.
I’m trying to get into the mindset that this person isn’t the person that I married and never will be.

She’s agreed to move back in with her parents. I’m going to rent a suv in her name and let her load it up and go.
Any potential issues to look out for? How is alimony done if she’s living with her parents?

I figured them taking her back after all these years, it’s the least I can do :-)

Haha, so I’ll add that she just decided to come tell me that I’ve been horrible to her all these years...
For some perspective: The girl drives a GD Porsche and doesn’t work!
Fortunately, I’ve kept all assets in my name and all cash in bank accounts that she has zero access to. That’s what getting threatened with divorce by a stay at home wife will do to you...

Well, the reason I control the finances is that she refuses to work and, anytime she’s upset, threatens divorce. How would you feel if your wife threatened divorce whenever she was upset? Made me feel like she would empty the account and hit the road. She’s got my CC and buys whatever she wants.
She isn’t interested in therapy. Last time she had one, I showed up, out of nowhere, and the therapist sided with me. That was her last session :-)
Narcissistic is pretty harsh. I’d say I’m probably the opposite. I’m a push over.
