Sorry if this seems like a non-answer, but it depends on if the alpha is introverted or extroverted. There's no set rule. The alpha talks when he wants to.

But when the alpha does talk, the people around him listen.

"Alpha" is not a personality. Alpha is an adjective that describes a man's relationship to other humans.

In Native American tribes where men don't talk much at all, there's an Alpha. Among 1940s New York gangsters that talked nonstop, there's an Alpha. In the movies, it's not about how much you say, it's about getting the best or last word.

It's about your word having meaning and being respected. If you ramble nervously or nonstop, your words mean nothing. If you're anxious and quiet because you're afraid of saying the wrong thing, the hot girl walks away because she's bored. Your words should tickle your own fancy. You should make yourself laugh. You should love the sound of your own voice enough to have a conversation with yourself. She could fucking walk away and you'd still have a good time. Alphas talk exactly that much, whatever that means for you.

Alpha men are confident

The whole "alpha men don't ask" is valid. Just be confident. It's not about how much you talk, it's about your perception of self.

To actually answer your question, sometimes I see talking a lot as a waste of time, but its really the content of your discussion and who it's with. For example if you spend an hour trying to talk about Minecraft to a hot chick you're probably not an alpha. But if you spend an hour talking to someone with whom you share a mutual interest, then it's time well spent and it has nothing to do with your status.

Also, it seems like I get a lot of shit now from male friends, they're always eager to prod at me. Do you think this is a bad sign?

One thing I know is that they feel comfortable doing this with me mostly because I'm non-reactive. I've been getting shit my whole life, people have always seemed to enjoy fucking with me. At this point, I've accepted it. But I'm worried that it means I don't get the respect I want.

The real distinction comes down to why you're talking. Talking to fill an awkward silence; to impress people, name-drop or brag; to explain yourself or apologize unnecessarily; or because you're nervous or uncomfortable are all beta tells. Talking to amuse yourself, lead the group, or to otherwise communicate in a genuine, uninhibited way is alpha.

Therefore, pick a purpose and use your tools (words, body language, tone) to make it happen as efficiently as you know how.

But an alpha does speak with purpose. Whether that purpose is internally based, externally playing, comedy, efficiency, narcissism, doesn't matter. They control the interaction most likely, and they have a reason behind their speaking. It could be for amusement, it could be deal brokering, but people listen. "Even higher alphas", they don't say things which are to be ignored unless specifically because the alpha wishes them to be ignored.

Now maybe bring soft/rarely spoken is in your definition of alpha, sure. No problems there. But there are also boisterous alphas, wordy alphas, comedic alphas, descriptive and prescriptive alphas, it's more about the underlying respect demanded than the exposition itself.

Underlying respect has many facets, the least of which are track record, proof, social support, and confidence, and of course, context

it's not that alphas talk less, it's more that non-alphas talk too much. nervousness, attention-seeking, etc cause Billy Beta to talk non-stop and say a lot of pointless shit. it comes across as very feminine.

a lot of guys over-emphasize a stoic, silent alpha male archetype. this works in some contexts but not all of them. sometimes you need to talk or want to say something.

Alpha is a mindset. No one man is entirely alpha except for Chad and he is just an archetype.

So it stands to reason that there are men with more beta traits who have the social mindset of an alpha. This goes for men who exhibit more alpha traits. There are some who have the social mindset of a beta, yet they are largely alpha in their mindset
