This is the UK. They are highly unlikely to lose this case.

[–]WeEatBabies 52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Even so, don't despair, ....

2 steps forward, 1 step back, is still progress.

[–]Budget_Still_4005 32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good point. The fact that they even got charged is a miracle

[–]ZS_1171 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oof

[–]PositivityCentral 56 points57 points58 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One of the two women is also charged with affray(threat of physical violence in UK law). The article headline also didn’t mention a third 19 yo who appeared alongside the two mentioned. She was charged with affray but not sexual assault.

[–]DouglasWallace 54 points55 points56 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Even just seeing this as a headline is a step forward.

I'm sure there will be many wondering why the girls should be in court over this, since most people don't seem to accept that a man's body is his own, not the property of whichever woman wants to do whatever she likes with him. But there will be many others who start to get the message that perhaps – just maybe – men do deserve the same rights as women.

[–]alclarkey 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

I'm gonna disagree with you. A butt slap, while rude, when done to either sex just doesn't seem like something that needs the courts involved. If you slap someone's butt and end up with a drink poured on you, justice served, end of story.

[–]omidoggo 39 points40 points41 points 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Keep that same energy if it was reversed...

[+]alclarkey -34 points-33 points-32 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

A guy slaps a girl's butt, he should get a drink in the face. I got my butt slapped, and I laughed it off. It didn't really bother me.

[–]MBV-09-C 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You do realize throwing a drink in someone's face isn't just an act of humiliation, right? Throwing alcohol in someone's face, depending on how strong the drink is, could end up damaging optic nerves and even blinding someone if it gets in their eyes. That's why it's considered an assault.

[+]alclarkey -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Then maybe not slap someone's butt without their consent?

[–]MBV-09-C 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

My issue being you're apparently not okay with taking someone to court over an issue like this but you're perfectly fine with assault (another more agreeably illegal thing) that could cause permanent damage. And I completely fail to see the logic in why, because even if it saves taxpayer money to not take the buttslap to court for sexual harassment, you'd instantly negate that and likely then some with the subsequent assault charge. There's just no thought put into that.

[–]Greedy_Sherbet1729 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But only if you're doing it to a woman right?

I mean men should laugh it off because.....? Wait why should they just laugh it off again?

[–]alclarkey -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say they should. I did, because it didn't really bother me that much. But if you're offended, sure say something or dump a drink on her.

[–]DouglasWallace 30 points31 points32 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If the guy had thrown his drink in her face, he would be up on assault charges. Absolutely the wrong thing to do.

[–]BreezyEasy1 38 points39 points40 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That’s just you. It does bother a lot of people

[+]alclarkey -21 points-20 points-19 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And that's ok. But grounds for wasting taxpayer dollars and the court's time and energy? Nah.

[–]nflcansmd 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think most people would feel uncomfortable if they were slapped on the arse by someone they don't know

[+]GarbageRyan -9 points-8 points-7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lmao the fact that you're getting downvoted for this is hilarious. you are entirely correct.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's sexual assault apology.

Are you a sexual assault apologist?

[–]alclarkey -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did you miss the part where I said it was rude? It's still a crime, but it seems to me like you want to see guys drawn and quartered for it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I see. Sexual assault is just 'rude'. Okay.

Guys are already drawn and quartered my g.

[–]alclarkey -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Gotta love that fallacy. Not all sexual assaults are equal, and some are less severe. Butt slapping is one of the less severe.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gotta love reducing sexual assault to being rude.

"Judge, I was just being rude".

[–]DouglasWallace 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I tend to agree IF THERE WAS EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW.

And, like I said, I suspect many feel as you do, which is why the headline is about slapping his butt, not about the more serious assault charges: the paper is trying to pass this off as a joke.

I still think it is a step forward, even at that. Some will not read it as a joke. Some, knowing that if the sexes were around the other way a man could be facing jail time, will welcome this being taken seriously.

In a country which treats a wolf whistle (which a lot of my exes have taken as a compliment) as a form of antisocial abuse over which court time is wasted, then I think court time is justified on this case — even if it were just a slap on the butt.

In a country which had some social sense and a lot less snowflakes, absolutely this would be a waste of effort. I'm not sure where to find such a country these days, though!

[–]rmbarnes 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree, maybe at worse a caution.

The thing is in the UK men have ended up on the sex offenders register for this (I thought this used to be just of pedos...), which has a huge impact on their lives. This is obviously nuts, but I think it's not until women start getting on the register for doing this that people will agitate for this to be changed.

[–]andejoh 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"They appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates Court today alongside a third 19year-old, Fiona Hoyle, who is charged with affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on a woman."

It seems that maybe his girlfriend took affront to it. I wonder if that's why it was even charged. At least in the U. S. DAs are know to throw every charge at a person. They then plead out the other charges to get an easy win.

[–]PlanD4Failures 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Charges were pressed and it's made the news. This is progress. Even if they walk, they'll think twice before doing this again.

[–]CyoneHotPee 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Waiting for their 1 month in jail.

[–]rmbarnes 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well the bigger thing will be to see if they end up on the sex offenders register for this as I think some men in the UK have. I'd rather do a month in prison than end up on the register.

[–]Living-Reference5329 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hopefully they get send down. Although I bet they won’t get any sentence time.

[–]Reasonable_Amoeba_89 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Genders here don't matter. What a tremendous waste of court time. Would still say the same if it were a man who gave a woman a pat on the arse.

[+]aigars2 -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

19 years teenage? Okay...

[–]BeardedAvenger 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're still a teenager at nineteen. It literally has the word "teen" in it.

[–]RoadRunner49 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That happens to me all the time. There hasn't been one time I've been to a college bar for an extended period of time without being groped by a woman. Shit I was groped since middle school by the girls at recess.

[+]pappo4ever -10 points-9 points-8 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I dont think this is fair. The fact that women routinely do this to men, doesn't means its fair to do it to them. Its an injustice, both ways.

[–]Mother-Key582 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I bet you wouldn’t be saying that if the genders were reversed. Then how come when a woman hits a man or assaults/rapes him when he didn’t even do anything, HE’S the one who always gets arrested and it’s always her word over his? Nice try.
