The male pill - why are we still waiting?

From what I've read on this, a male birth control pill is harder to develop than a female birth control pill because it's basically "easier to trick the body into thinking it's pregnant" than it is to kill the hundreds of millions of sperm in 1 ejaculation. Furthermore, it's risky in the sense that there might not be a simple "turn off, turn on" valve for sperm production. If you temporarily stop sperm production, it could be permanent or cause lasting effects. Someone more qualified than me can probably expound or correct me if I said anything wrong.

Loads of people already want this (yes, even some gals), but there are some major problems:

It's not nearly as profitable
Feminists and pro-female movements have a serious incentive not to want this (it puts anti-conception more in the hands of men, including prevention of paternity fraud and baby-trapping), which means you'll lose social power
You really, really, do not want anything highly hormonal if the pill was anything to go by, unless you were willing to continue taking it for the rest of your life bar a few periods of getting someone pregnant. The pill can do some incredibly devious things that shows you shouldn't mess with your biology too much. One of them is the "I don't love my partner anymore" phenomenon some women go through when they get off the pill

That's already three hurdles, and the first two alone are pretty much political suicide (politicians sell medicine, not prevention or cures). The last one is not pushing something that could harm the guy or society as a whole.

A few years ago I remember the manosphere got really hyped on vasalgel, which was supposed to have come out by now. I haven't followed the news on it since then, only remembering some guys talked about it getting halted or running into blockers.

There was a trial at the end of last year in the UK of a cream men could rub on their chest daily which acted the same as the pill. I think it was stage 2 of human trials.

Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance looks to be the best candidate. Basically a gel is injected into your "tubes" blocking sperm migration, et voila no babies for you. It is reversible, non invasive and is non hormonal. Google "Vasalgel", hopefully it passes clinical trials and will be approved

Because it's far more dangerous and complicated to make such a pill for males, the risks are greater

I actually had to take a pill for medical reasons years ago which essentially blocked the sperm on it's way out.

I assume it's not a good long term thing - I was told not to have sex / masturbate while on it (was only a month.) Guess just blocking it off will lead to a build up which has to go somewhere.

I did cum once while on it and orgasming with nothing coming out is a very weird experience.

If I'm with a woman who doesn't want kids yet and I take this 'pill' I'm effectively chemically castrating myself. If we don't get married then what? I'm screwed b/c of 'equality'.
The best option is abstinence as that creates equality for both sexes.

They are still working on getting the formula right. It needs to be both effective and safe. The side effects of the last big trial were much higher than for the female pill.

The study was halted early as one of two independent safety panels took issue with the high rate of side effects. This wasn’t the researchers saying, “Oh these poor men.” This was an independent review board. The adverse events that raised concerns were: acne (45 percent), increased libido (38 percent), “emotional disorder” (16.9 percent), injection site pain (23.1 percent), and myalgias, or muscle pain (16.3 percent). One man committed suicide—which somehow the researchers said wasn’t related to the drug because his family said he was stressed at work—and one other attempted suicide.

They tried pills on some monkey, 50% of heart issues.

They tried something that you inject in the penis, 40% of loss of fertility.

It is harder to stop the constant production of gametes than to stop an ovulation that happen one time per month.
