Heavily downvoted on Feminism subreddit just for saying women can rape men too. And then feminist say that they are empathetic towards male rapes too. Lmao bullshit. They fucking hate it when they realize they are not the only victims around.

I’ve been there, twice. And what did my depression and suicide attempts get me? My wife divorced me, the moment I needed help she shut off, after years of me being there through her stuff.

I may have not been as supportive because I didn’t know what to say or do, but never left because of it. I struggled and she shut off and decided her job was more important.

This is when I realized as a guy, there’s little to no help for you if you struggle. People don’t care, they really don’t.

A disappointing part of the "discussion" section :

Why are there gender differences in suicide intent? The results presented above support previous evidence showing that males have a higher intent to die than females. This evokes questions as to why this would be the case.

Indeed, it does.

Some theorists contend that females attempt suicide earlier in the evolution of psychiatric morbidity than males, which might represent less of an intention to die, and more a desire to communicate distress or change their social environment [21, 22].

Well, that's not a reason "why", though. Like many things could be at play there. It could be that it's just how women and men are wired, sure. But it also could be that men have learned there's no benefit trying to use their display of suffering to try to affect their social environment, that it just doesn't work. Or any number of things.

Another theory suggests that because males have a higher intent to die than females, females may be more reluctant to perform a SSA because it is considered ‘masculine’ [6].

Who came first, the chicken or the egg?

These gender-specific beliefs and attitudes towards self-harm may contribute to the explanation of young men’s low rates of suicidal behaviour and their high rates of suicide mortality [43], however, more research needs to be conducted in this area in order to develop concrete theories to support prevention efforts.

Not even passing consideration is given to the idea that, maybe, just maybe, the social situation is worse to live in as a man than otherwise, that men might actually have more reasons to want to kill themselves.

Remember folks, when reading social. Sciences, questioning the church of womenworsting is not an option. They already stray in dangerous territory, do not ask too much.

The finding you quoted actually supports the "females 'commit suicide' for attention, men do commit suicide to die" argument. The "overdose on tic tacs" meme is real.

[–]AskingToFeminists 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, yes and no. As I pointed in other comments, they only found a slight difference in the proportion of women committing suicide with intent to die compared to men (57% for men compared to 48.6% for women), while the raw numbers they found are actually slightly higher for women intending to die compared to men, due to the slightly higher number of women attempting suicide.

There is indeed a bigger proportion of the suicide attempts by taking pills from women which were classified as suicidal gestures, but overall, they still found a bigger number of women attempting suicide in order to kill themselves.

Basically, this study found

  • only a slightly bigger number of attempted suicide by women, as opposed to the common report that "women attempt suicide much more". (by several factors)

  • only a slightly higher proportion of men actually attempting suicide in order to kill themselves, despite the common known fact that many more men die by suicide than women by several factors

And they didn't really provide any explanations for anything.

[–]JustJamie- 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't derive intent or desire based on attempt style. I'm female and I used pills. I considered a knife but didn't think I could handle the physical pain. I considered other methods but the all had drawbacks. A woman who takes 5 pills is looking for attention or help. A woman who takes the whole bottle intends to die. Professionals make concussions without talking to the depressed person theirselves.

An interesting article. Although I would raise a point that might be lost to those who don't read it in its entirety : significant is meant in the "statistically significant" meaning of the term. If your sample size and measure is precise enough, a 0.1% difference between two population can be called "significant". It just means that it isn't lost in the noise.

If you look at the paper, for all men, you have SSA for 57% of the sample, but for women, it's 48.6%.

So while a difference of 10% is not a small difference, it still doesn't account for the difference of a factor 4 in the number of men dying of suicide compared to women. Particularly given that this is a percentage relative to the total number of suicide attempts, which means that the absolute number of women engaging in SSA is still higher than the absolute number of men.

So this study doesn't explain that much.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is usually said that women attempt more suicide than men.

[–]AskingToFeminists 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And this article confirms it. And while this article still say that men attempt suicide "with intent to end their lives" more often in proportion of all suicide attempts they make, it also say that women attempt suicide with intent to end their life more often than men in raw numbers.

[–]Mode1961 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It comes down to definition though, doesn't it? e.g. Is cutting an SSA, some would say YES, others would say NO depending on where they cut themselves.

[–]AskingToFeminists 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, they solved those ambiguities by having the metrics be based not on self assessment but on assessment of the cases by professionals, who received the same training in how to solve ambiguities.

I agree that there are definition issues, amongst other things, but they did take steps to mitigate the effect of that.

[–]Mode1961 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It could be that the metric SSA is not stringent enough, iow, things that count as SSA really aren't an SSA.

[–]SirDrippinBalls 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago* (16 children) | Copy Link

Glad "serious suicide attempt" is specified. Never understood why people who are allegedly suicidal are swallowing pills and then survive (what a surprise) if they can get a Shotgun for 200 bucks (Edit: in America) and just blow their brains out, which has a enormous higher lethality rate

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also a lot of research which says that women attempt more than men can be bullshit. You basically survey and ask people if they tried to commit suicide and they could lie. We cannot however lie about objective dead bodies of men found by suicide.

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago [recovered] (10 children) | Copy Link

Arent all suicide attempts to be taken seriously?

[–]AskingToFeminists 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

There is a difference between someone who go somewhere remote, try to ensure he's alone, and tries to hang himself, only to be saved by happenstance, and someone who takes a bunch of pill before calling their friends or 911.

Both are suicide attempts, both are to be taken seriously, but one indicate a serious intent to die, while the other only indicates that you try to signal to your social circle that you're not well.

One would be classified as SSA in the paper (serious suicide attempt), while the other would be classifiedas SG (suicidal gesture).

The intent of the two is very different, and shouldn't be treated as identical.

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

What about those who do call 911 and are successful at killing themselves? would it be both SSA and SG?

[–]AskingToFeminists 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What matters is more the intent than the result, there. Beside, this study is only about attempts. So people who succeed are not counted in it.

[–]azazelcrowley 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Suicidal Ideation V Suicidal Intent.

In short, if these women presented themselves to doctors offices they'd be given pills and therapy and told to go home.

If these males presented themselves to doctors offices, they'd be committed and held in custody of the medical establishment for a few days or weeks in addition to the above.

SSA is a result of suicidal intent. Cutting your wrists is a sign of suicidal ideation.

Contrapoints made a comparison to these for politics the other day. It's the difference between tweeting about a communist revolution on the internet and fantasizing about it constantly, and building molotov cocktails in your basement, smuggling guns to people, and training militias. (She was mocking the far-left for "Revolutionary ideation").

Which one of those do you "Take seriously"?

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Where is the data for this? It does not matter your gender, you still get hold up in the psychiatric hospital, have an evaluation, get the assistance necessary and go home when you don't show to be at risk for suicidal behavior. Edit: Is this different depending on the country?

[–]azazelcrowley 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

The data for what? These are the terms.

It's why psychologists and doctors ask you if you actually plan on comiting suicide, or if you're just thinking a lot about killing yourself.

People with suicidal ideation tend to make spontaneous and unplanned attempts to kill themselves and don't follow through often. People with plans tend to actually go through with it and research it.

It's why women end up in the hospital so often having "Attempted suicide" by taking a load of pills. Because they didn't actually plan it, didn't research the dosage required, and thought a bottle of paracetamol would do the trick (Or at least get them attention for trying). Men, because they actually intend to kill themselves, don't make "Attempts", they get it done because they research it first, set out an agenda, and then do it.

Following on from the revolution analogy, it's the difference between someone who spontaneously decides to throw a rock at a cop while crying "Revolution!", and someone who has mapped out DC and set up bombs in key areas alongside gathering some friends to try and storm the whitehouse with machine guns.

They're both "Attempts", but one is farcical and should not be seen as seriously as the other. Even calling it an "attempt" is only taking into account the delusional mindset of the person going through with it, from an external perspective, there is no chance of it actually working. It's like "I'm attempting to become president" while mailing "I am running for president, please place me on the ballot" to the local DMV. Sure, it's an attempt, in the most meaningless possible way.

This is why "SSA" is a valuable term. It seperates people actually at risk from suicide (men) from attention whores who like the idea of being troubled and edgy because their core identity is built on having it harder than other people (Women).

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link

Is the protocol different for each country? which country are you referring to?

[–]azazelcrowley 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Protocol may be different in some countries. I'm from the UK.

[+]C00021 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Okay! that makes so much sense. I have not doubt there is discrimination for getting the mental health resources needed base on gender. I am not from the UK, but where I am from they do hold women in a psychiatric hospital until the evaluation shows that you are no longer a danger to yourself.

One thing to clarify is that the " having a mental disorder is edgy" mentality is mostly shown in women but I have not doubt some men do it too.

[–]azazelcrowley 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I am not from the UK, but where I am from they do hold women in a psychiatric hospital until the evaluation shows that you are no longer a danger to yourself.

This presumes they are a danger to themselves, I.E, actually planning on committing suicide rather than engaged in suicidal ideation.

[–]accidental_me 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I doubt that you can buy a shotgun just like that anywhere in Europe.

[–]AskingToFeminists 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't, although some sorts of firearms are pretty common in rural regions, where you have a lot of hunters.

[–]SonOfHibernia -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You can’t buy a shotgun like that anywhere in Massachusetts. Bullets are also almost impossible to find. Guns are heavily regulated in the Northeast/New England. Europeans think every American is like a drive away from getting a gun and it’s not really like that. A very small portion of the population own almost all the guns.

[–]yesman783 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By some estimates there are over 120 million gun owners in the US who own over 400 million guns and over 7 trillion rounds of ammunition. Gun regulations are determined by the state, not the region so Vermont has generally lax laws while New Jersey has very strict ones, usually you can look at the percentage of urban area in a state and that will determine how harsh the gun laws are.

[–]MsEvil_Doctor_Potter 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's probably due to toxic masculinity teaching them to bottle up their feelings or mental illness and not talk about it or tell anyone

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

'talking or telling about things' is not what always solves a problem. Talking about things is not going to pay my bills. Men need masculinity to fight life and to grow. Feminity is what makes people weak. When calamity falls I am not going to cry and bitch around . I have to fight and I need all my masculinity for that. Men have life hard because society is gynocentric. Life is easier for women and hard for men. Society protects women and considers male as disposable.
