What do you think about Emma Watson's HeForShe movement for gender equality?

I think most of the things "feminists" want on a global scale should just be fighting for *human rights." Whether your a man or a woman shouldn't matter in the eyes of the law when it comes to marriage, divorce, rape and abuse.

Watch from 8:52. She's talking about genuine formal equality. I think she is a great inspiration.

Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too. Because to date, I've seen my father's role as a parent being valued les by society despite my needing his presence, as a child, as much as my mother's. I've seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a men—or less of a man. In fact, in the U.K., suicide is the biggest killer of men, between 20 to 49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I've seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don't have the benefits of equality, either. We don't want to talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are.

I can't see how she is selfish at all, she's already privileged, and she seemed to focus on real cases, like education equality in third world countries. It doesn't mean she believes it's more important than starvation, just like you buying yourself a lamp for your home doesn't mean that you think those money were better spent on a lamp than an HIV vaccine for a child.

The wage gap myth though.

I think she was right on a lot of things and wrong on a lot of things. Gender equality is a male issue, too. But feminism isn't going to fix that. Focusing on one gender will only make matters worse, not better. And yet that's what her entire speech was about. Even in brining up fathers her plea to allow them to be "human and vulnerable" came from the place that the female mind is the default. "Let fathers be mothers" is what she was saying. Which is besides the point. The underlying point in saying that is men and the masculine is still the enemy. Don't let men be men, don't support men, don't acknowledge male issues or the inherent flaw in feminism thinking men have the height of justice and equality (they don't)... It's still shaming men and putting women above men. She was close but not quite close enough.

EDITED TO ADD: and the line "there is no country that has achieved gender equality" is utter BS. We will never achieve the equality they are looking for because it's impossible but it's an utter and complete falsehood that women are not considered or treated as equal citizens in many countries including the US.

Feminism won't solve anything. But education will. My grandmother did not finish the 3rd grade. She is illiterate. My father and uncle, however, went to college, got decent jobs, and managed to come to the US for a better life. Here, I am given opportunities my cousins back in our home country couldn't even dream of. Many people don't have the same luxury of getting an education, though, when their families are starving back home.

So if it takes some high-profile celebrity flinging the word feminism around instead of human rights to force people to take notice and hopefully light a fire under certain nations' governments to enact social change, then so be it. The wording used doesn't matter to me, the results do.

It's very pro-women, which is to be expected... it's feminism. But yeah, rehashing the wage gap myth? She wonders why people call feminists man-haters? Maybe it's because her movement is called heforshe. Men serving women, men sacrificing their needs for women, and women getting upset when men call them out on it.

I actually enjoyed her speech. While I do think there are other pressing issues to attend to. We simply can't say "well it could be worse" for then we will not strive to be better.

I also realize that while I have face no sex (I wish she used sex because this is the biological definition, while 'gender' is the social construct) inequality it could be largely due to I am caucasian and from a wealthy family.

While her efforts won't influence me, I do realize other persons could definitely benefit.

Heforshe is inherently sexist, and should be taken down. Women's rights =/= equal rights.
