with boys I find it helps to do an activity, rather than just chat. you could play ball, tennis or any other sport, or play board games, go for a hike. It is a good way to bond and it is easier to get conversation going this way. hope it helps! :)

You have small children, and small children need to be guided, taught, and cared for.

She has teenagers, and teenagers, especially boys, need to become adults.

If you want to conversation to flow with a teenage boy, speak to him in a way that acknowledges him growing into an adult. Instead of being directive, like you would with a young child, ask him questions and allow him to teach you something... even if it's only about his videogame that he likes.

He's going to need to take the lead as an adult... because that's what men need in order to thrive, and he instinctively knows this. Let him practice on you by showing you things, telling you things, teaching you things, taking the lead.

If you are out somewhere on the weekend, where would he like to go? What adventure ideas does he have? Hey, teach me to play your game. Hey, how do you do that with the skateboard?

As a former teenage boy I don't really think I was super motivated to build a relationship with my aunt, but it was very like you described, money and gifts for birthdays and xmas. Though as I grew older and less awkward it improved naturally so I think you're just in a akward time period in their lives. What you feel you didn't do when they were young you can still do when their older, where you can maybe relate more.

1) Ask them about their hobbies. Little boys or grown, they will LOVE to tell you about them, how they work, their accomplishments, etc.

2) Praise them for their accomplishments. Boys are starved for this. Even if their parents do so, they still can use more.

3) Play board games or some other activity with them. Not stupid ones like Monopoly, but something that uses their brains.

As a teenager boy who hides in his room all the time , it's very nice of you to wanna try to be a great aunt , it's actually not so hard to talk to teenager , I mean we are people ,maybe talk about YouTube , or new videogames like resident evil 9 . I really wanna say don't go to their room without consent and trying to get them out , they will probably dislike it . But the fact that you are trying will be noticed of course , because you are doing your b st and that's great

Be interested in their hobbies without shaming them for it. They like to play a certain video game? Search up online what other games people liked. They are talking about a new movie? Take them. Teenagers love things to do and buy which they otherwise they couldn’t afford. But then again, they are teenagers so don’t beat yourself up if they don’t want to spend hours on end with you :)

At 16, try talking to them like people...I don't mean that in a mean way or that you aren't, but it's easy for relatives to seem like they are talking to you like you're 10 when you are that age.

Say things like:

"How's life?" ...and if the answer seems too light, follow it with "No, really....how's life as a 16 year old boy? It's been a long time since I was your age and I never was a boy".

Pay attention to the answer and don't just keep it fluff, which happens to much with relatives at that age.

There's nothing wrong with just plain being straight with them and saying that you feel like the years are slipping by and you've missed a lot, and you would like to spend more time with them.

Above all, show that you always have their actual best interests and happiness at heart.

Once every few months ask your sister in law to let you have both your nephews for a weekend. Gives her and her partner time to hang out. That should solve everything.
