Are you completely packing for him? If not he'll probably bring everything he actually needs while he's away (deoderant, toothpaste, etc). My girlfriend will sometimes hide a dozen or so of homemade cookies in my luggage which is always nice (foods just works).

The best thing she does is when I come home there will typically be a candy (she knows what I like) and a little note and sometimes I cheap little gift. Its thoughtful and makes me happy that's she's excited for me to be back. Then she'll typically throw my clothes in the wash and I'll just be able to relax (that's the best part).

My husband used to travel for work a lot, and he always packed for himself. I think the main thing that is helpful is to give him peace and stay out of his hair after your enthusiastic welcome home. Let him unwind from the trip for a couple of hours before telling him all the stuff that broke while he was gone :)

Practical/Handy : If he is traveling by air, the airport has a restriction on toothpaste. After you pass security, you can't buy any toothpaste, so make sure he has a small tube (< 3 oz?) that can pass security so he can brush his teeth.

Fun : Hand write a note in big girly writing saying something along the lines of "I love you very much XOXO" and draw one of those large heart shapes on it. Stuff the note in some pocket that you know he will open, but one that he'll open after some time in his trip.

If it's a business trip, iron his shirt the day before he leaves.

I sometimes need to pack for my husband for his work trips as he is often too busy to do so and will often get called away last minute and just doesn't have time.

One tip - make sure you check the weather forecast for where he will be before you pack his clothes. My husband likes to pack light so I try to make sure I just pack clothes that are appropriate for where he will be - ie no coat if it is going to be hot.

2nd tip - get your husband to give you a list of all the stuff he is going to use every time - For instance, I know to pack a suit and 2 shirts plus toiletries and he always wants his kindle charged and put in the bag - so I make sure I have that stuff for him and then it's just a matter of getting together some clothes & shoes for when he is not working. - and the notes sound like a great idea! - I've not done that before but it's one to try next time

To be honest I don't really pack for my husband. He prefers to do that himself. I just wash and iron everything before he leaves. On the day before he leaves though he likes when I quiz him if he remembered the most important items (passport, wallet, etc.).

One thing I learned that my husband loves while he travels is just being available to talk on the phone or text in his morning before work and in the evening before bed. My husband travels a lot in other time zones and it means a lot to him if I wake up early to talk to him before he goes to work. It's a little thing, but I really think it shows him you're thinking of him.

While he's away I make sure to keep the house running smoothly. There is nothing worse than coming home from a trip to a dirty house with lots of chores to do.

Pack for him? Uh, no thanks. He's a grown man and can pack for himself. This is like Laura Doyle describing how we should stop picking out and buying their clothes. We're not their mommies.

Mine leaves home for work a lot. Sometimes it's short like three weeks. Sometimes it's months.

I will tell you an interesting thing happens when he's gone. It's like an evil fairy or a gremlin breaks all our stuff when he's not here. (We call ours The Deployment Gremlin.). The computer will go haywire or the check engine light goes on in the car or the dishwasher stops working. What is really happening is normal stuff, but I actually notice it more acutely because he isn't here fixing it. It makes me realize how much he does around the house that I don't even notice.

One of my friends was in month 5 of a deployment, finishing her masters degree, working, and having to mow the lawn in the Southern heat of summer. Ick. She sent me this pic. We laughed so hard. I now tell my husband, "I'm a strong, independent woman, but I need my man!" Separations like these grow your gratitude in ways you can't imagine.

When you feel angry that he's gone, focus the anger on the job, never on him. He's doing it for you. :-)

I wouldn't worry about what to pack. Just be aware that the man will want to come home to a clean and peaceful house. You might be getting cabin fever and want to go out, but a man who spends a lot of time on the road enjoys a home cooked meal (restaurant cooking gets old fast) and a quiet evening at home.

EDIT: I talked this over with my husband while making dinner. He suggested that I add this piece of advice.

When you're talking on the phone to your husband, don't go on and on that when he's gone life is hard. When you talk about all the crap that isn't going well, it is frustrating for him because there's nothing he can do about it. Plus, no one wants to call home and hear a bunch of venting. It doesn't mean be Pollyanna--life is real. It means that you want your phone calls to be pleasant and enjoyable. Keep a balance and try stay out of the complain-y mode.

Try to remember youre packing for him an not you. Most men are much more functional and pragmatic and don't care for "little touches " that remind him of home.

I usually refill his toiletry travel bottles for him (shampoo, conditioner, etc). He'll pack for himself but he gets overwhelmed and likes to have my help on how many shirts/socks/etc to bring.

He hates overpriced airport food and gross airline food so he really loves when I send him off with plenty of homemade food. I'll pack a noodle stir fry (still good when cold) in disposable to-go containers, a bag of mixed nuts and some fruit or other travel snacks. He needs to eat a lot and having good quality food is super important to his mental well being.
