My wife and I do it like this. She has her money and bank account, I have mine. We split all bills 50/50. Then we agree to put away an amount each month into joint savings. after that, our money is our own to do whatever with. meet the responsibilities first. we usually just tuck away into our individual savings accounts, but regardless. No one in the relationship should have control over the others money, it will create drama 100% of the time. totally ridiculous.

I see a lot of young boys do this in there relationships, they think that they need to relinquish all money or collectivize the money with there so. then she goes down hill and they end up broke, so damn dumb.

edit: that said, whenever I or my wife make a big purchase, we typically talk to the other about it. "hey, I think i want to buy this, what do you think? think its a mistake?"

Yeah no. I work. My wife stays home with the kid. Maybe I earned the money, but it’s OUR money. I would never spend $4000 without talking to her about it first. We’re married. We make these decisions together.

Without knowing more about their finances and how this Went down I wouldn't make a call here. For instance, they make good money but are the living paycheck to paycheck? Is there a risk that his income would be reduced substantially? (As in Sales or Investments) I've known people living above their means Making 40K and 300K. One is just as poor as The other. Did she come unglued on him or did she ask in a way that says "we should talk about this?"

I just don't get the "I DESERVE this" mentality. The whole "I make more than you" argument falls flat for me too. You're an Adult, You're married, Act like it.

I think, she's being overly stingy and domineering. First of all, even $100,000 is more than enough for bills and a 2-year-old's expenses (unless you were a billionaire in previous life), second $200,000 is his (probably VERY hard-earned) money after all, no matter what people say; a $4000 trip with your bros doesn't hurt. Maybe it's because my patriarchal culture that for all my life I've experienced it the other way around: the husband gets to keep his hard-earned money after basic expenses but the wife is supposed to be responsible with her finances and not waste it on stupid shit like makeup and solo trips. I guess it works entirely different in the West.

I saw this before the Edit. And I thought it was shitty to spend 4k, since I already own good enough money and have to save a few months to have 4k laying around. I assumed 4k was much to them.
