...after a salary review found they were being paid less than their male colleagues.

FOR NO VALID REASON WHATSOEVER, I suppose. There's never any valid reason. "It's the same work!"

40 hours of work vs 55 hours of work? No matter. It's the same. Male professors are spending more time publishing research articles while the women are doing nothing beyond their minimum hours of teaching? Fuff, irrelevant.

10 pounds of bananas are the same as 20 pounds, so they should cost the same. They're all bananas!

I wonder if the U of Guelph economics department would have any comment on this?

They probably all already identified as Non-Male.

I am so glad I don't work in a North American university. It was made very very clear that certain people were not going to be treated fairly.

https://news.uoguelph.ca/2018/06/salary-anomaly-review-complete/

This is the news article from the university itself, and includes an in-depth pdf about how they came to this conclusion.

It only focusses on salary though, not on hours worked etc.

[–]goodfoobar 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Have gone through the PDF.

page 3 Methodology

The major issue with the survey was a low response rate and the actual responses showed a fair amount of bias in who responded versus those who did not respond. Specifically, males and faculty at the assistant professor level were severely underrepresented.

So the lower paid males are severely underrepresented in this survey.

page 6

The distribution of salaries as at July 1, 2017 for males and females is shown in Figure 3. As can be seen, the average wage for female faculty (~$140,450) is lower than for male faculty (~$152,180). Also of note is that the distribution of salaries of male faculty are skewed to the right more than those for females, meaning that a greater percent of males earn above $150,000.

The lower paid males are underrepresented so it makes sense that the average male respondent would have been paid more then the average female respondent.

Do not think the following multivariate analysis compensates for the severely underrepresented lower paid males in the raw data. page 8

For the multivariate analysis, we use the following predictors:

1.Gender–Male or Female (where Female is the reference group)

2.Rank-Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (where Assistant Professor is the reference group)

3.Time from hire–number of years since hired at the U of G

4.Time from PhD–number of years since receiving a PhD

5.Performance Ranking–assigned to a group based on the 2016 performance rating of either Unsatisfactory, Improvement Required/Developmental, Good, Very Good or Outstanding (where Unsatisfactory is the reference group). A point of note, two additional groups were added to this predictor to capture faculty without 2016 performance rankings (i.e., new faculty and those in an administrative position in 2016).

page 11 The solution was to

  1. Resolve all 35 anomalous salaries up to 90% of their fitted salary, and then round to the nearest $500, at an estimated cost of approximately $164,500.

  2. Resolve the gender gap. Increase updated salaries of females by $2,050, regardless of whether the faculty member was anomalous or not, at a cost is approximately $610,900.

So some low paid males may have gotten more money while females got a minimum $2,050 extra regardless of their current pay. This is all based on an under representation of lower paid males.

Instead of focusing on individual differences, let’s just increase the salary of the whole group. So if a woman gets paid more than a man, she’ll still get the raise.

[–]Icedstrawbewwi 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That won't make anyone happy because the same ratio of men being paid more than women will continue to exist... is what they would say.

[–]PanderjitSingh_k 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The untenured lower pay men likely failed to respond out of fear.

They know HR very likely will not keep responses anonymous and will punish men who interfere with their project to give even more unearned privilege to women.

There's about to be a lot more 'non-males' on their staff.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Which is exactly the way they want it.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True, but they want the "non-males" to actually be non-males, not males who claim to be non-males in order to avoid blatant discrimination.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Every university in the area is fucking cancer. Guelph, Laurier, Waterloo, all dogshit SJW shitholes. I'm really angry academia has come to this, and they all think they're so progressive and morally superior.

[–]vonthe 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On average salaries in the 150k range, this is a pretty small difference, about 1.3%.

[–]Throwaway_Old_Guy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've said it in jest before, but I think it's becoming more relevant with each passing day.

I was an Auxiliary Building Service Worker at a College in BC, and even though I generally worked only weekends, I still witnessed enough foolishness from Faculty, Staff and Students to surmise; "This is supposed to be a place of higher education, but I've yet to see any sign of it".

Yea, no sexism there.

Aren't they miss-gendering the females that identify male by giving them this raise?

[–]nascarracer99316 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is bullshit.

Hello lawsuits.

[–]PanderjitSingh_k 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sex discrimination against men (but not women) is legal in Canada. See the 1982 Constitution Act. Men are literal second class citizens.

[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gender is flexible right? Identify as female when you come up for review/raises then go back when that's over.

Isn't Dr. Jordan Peterson from Canada?

I get that Canada is under the rule of Cucklord Trudeau but given how the popularity and reknown of Dr. Peterson has spread worldwide, you'd think his home nation of Canada would be the last to have people pull a Cathy Newman like this.

[–]Blu3Skies 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He's become the outspoken voice that he is as a result of all of that, and they continue driving forward despite him interjecting his voice of reason. They don't want to hear it so they refuse to. The vast majority of people are waking up to what's going on, though, I'd say. From what I see down in the U.S. at least. Sure there are plenty of loons out there (albeit with loud voices) but the majority of us are pretty sensible.

[–]TheMythof_Feminism 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Are you Canadian?

How long until Trudeau is out and who are the candidates to replace him?

[–]Blu3Skies 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not, actually. I'm from the US I just enjoy Dr. Peterson's work and societal/psychological commentary so I try to keep tabs on things.

[–]TheMythof_Feminism 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cool, I ordered Dr. Peterson's book last week.

I am very much looking forward to reading it.

2019 is the next election and it cannot come any faster

[–]TheMythof_Feminism 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks.

I remember Canadians complaining about "Stephen Harper" but although he seemed bland, he was at least functional. Trudeau is a disaster.
